This commit provides an example script that embeds STARlight UPC events into hadronic Pb-Pb pile-up, anchored to a real run. - Every N-th collision (default 10) is a UPC event in its own bunch crossing; the others are Angantyr Pb-Pb collisions. - The interaction rate and the timeframe length come from the anchor run. - The number of background events is set so that none repeats within a timeframe. This changes the UPC example to keep the full hadronic rate and add the UPC events on top. - The UPC events now come at their own rate (default 67 kHz, about one per ITS readout frame) instead of replacing every 10th hadronic collision. - The number of distinct background events is reduced to 30. - The release is MC-prod-2026-v13-1, since older tags anchor the first job where the ITS dead map masks all chips. This provides an example script that injects STARlight UPC events into hadronic Pb-Pb pile-up, anchored to a real run. It is meant as a starting point for PWG-UD studies of how overlapping hadronic collisions and other UPC events affect UPC tracking, vertexing and event selection. It builds on the setup of the "Processes with hadronic background" productions (https://its.cern.ch/jira/browse/O2-6883).
Compared to that setup, the hadronic collisions keep the full rate of the anchor run, and the UPC events are added on top as an independent stream (
--embeddPattern 67000,1000000:1000000, about one per ITS readout frame) instead of replacing every second hadronic collision (r0:e2). The timeframe length is taken from the anchor run instead of being forced to 128 orbits, which with realistic pile-up made TPC digitisation exceed the memory of a GRID slot.Tested on the GRID with MC-prod-2026-v13-1 for 2023 Pb-Pb runs 544013 (8 kHz) and 544868 (19 kHz). In the AOD, the UPC collisions are identified by generator ID 51. Note that tags before MC-prod-2026-v12-1 anchor the first job at the start of the run, where the ITS dead map masks all chips (fixed by #2465).
