Requesting changes for the inline comments above. The Vaadin 25 bind* and focus(FocusOption...) default methods act on the host element instead of the inner Switch, so they need overrides. The MEDIUM Javadoc also needs updating.

Please verify the styles for disabled and readonly states (#2)
|
@javier-godoy I checked both states against #2, and I think they already match what we agreed there:
If something else looks wrong (a specific theme, dark mode, or a case not in the demo), could you share the case? I'll take a look. |

@javier-godoy Based on #4, I changed the read-only border tint to match it: 40% of the variant color mixed with |

Disabled still ignores color variants
What 1.x actually does
1.x does not ignore color variants when disabled.
The only rule for the disabled state in fc-toggle-button.js is:
None of the variant rules exclude [disabled]:
The only rules that check :not([disabled]) are the two hover filter: brightness(...) rules.
So in 1.x, a checked, disabled success toggle has a green track at 50% opacity, and its active label is green text at 50% opacity. error is red, warning is yellow, contrast is dark, each at half opacity. The variant is kept and faded, not ignored. Disabling a toggle never changes its hue, only its opacity.
What we agreed in #2
In #2 the justification did say that ignoring color variants for disabled components is Vaadin's behavior. But what was decided was:
▎ Disabled state it's okay as it is. ✔
"As it is" meant the disabled state as it existed at that point, which is the 1.x behavior above: variant kept, faded by opacity: 0.5. The only change #2 agreed to was for read-only (transparent background, base border, desaturated variant). Nothing was decided about changing the disabled state, and nothing in 1.x was changed after #2 to make disabled toggles ignore their variant. A comment explaining why the current behavior is fine can't be read later as agreement to a different behavior.
So "in #2 we agreed that this is fine" covers the 1.x rendering, not the one in this PR.
What this PR does
In fc-toggle-button.css
fc-toggle-button:is([theme~='color-primary'], [theme~='color-success'], [theme~='color-error'], [theme~='color-warning'], [theme~='color-contrast'])
> .fc-toggle-button-row > vaadin-switch[checked]:not([readonly], [disabled]) {
--vaadin-switch-background: var(--_toggle-button-variant-color);
--vaadin-switch-icon-color: var(--_toggle-button-variant-color);
}
When the switch is disabled, none of our variables are set and vaadin-switch falls back to its own theme styles. Those don't produce a neutral "variant ignored" look either. For a checked disabled switch, both themes tint the track with the primary/accent color:
- Lumo (vaadin-lumo-styles/src/components/switch.css):
:host([disabled][checked]) {
--vaadin-switch-background: var(--lumo-primary-color-10pct);
--vaadin-switch-icon-color: color-mix(in srgb, var(--lumo-primary-color) 10%, var(--lumo-base-color) 50%);
}
- Aura (aura/src/components/switch.css):
&[disabled] {
&[checked] {
--vaadin-switch-background: color-mix(in srgb, var(--aura-accent-color) 20%, transparent);
}
}
So with this PR, a checked, disabled color-error toggle doesn't render gray: it renders a faint blue (primary/accent) track. Same for color-success, color-warning and color-contrast. The variant is replaced by primary, which is not "ignored" and not "Gray = Inactive". A disabled error toggle looking like a faded primary toggle arguably says something wrong about the data. That was the very concern in #2 (the variant communicates what the value means).
|
@javier-godoy You're right, I misread #2: I checked it with an unchecked disabled toggle, where the variant color never shows. Checked disabled toggles now keep the variant color, faded, as in 1.x (22dd6d0). I also added the disabled color variants to the demo, since that case wasn't there. |

Summary
Version 2.0 of the add-on, rebuilt on top of the core Vaadin Switch introduced in Vaadin 25.3. It requires Vaadin 25.3+ and Java 21. Version 1.x stays in maintenance for Vaadin 24 and 25.0–25.2.
Why
With Switch in core, the add-on only makes sense for what core doesn't offer. Instead of maintaining our own switch, the add-on now delegates the switch itself to Switch (value, keyboard, focus, ARIA role and state, read-only, disabled, RTL, forced colors) and keeps its differentiators on top: side labels and icons, label highlighting, color and size variants, long swipe, and touch swipe.
This fixes the accessibility gaps of 1.x: the toggle is now announced as a switch with its on/off state, is focusable, and works with the Space key.
Changes
Component
ToggleButtonextendsAbstractField<ToggleButton, Boolean>and wraps aSwitch. The fluent API and the value change event type (ComponentValueChangeEvent<ToggleButton, Boolean>) are unchanged.aria-labelledby/aria-describedby.fc-toggle-button.jsis now a small custom element without shadow DOM that only handles clicks on labels/icons and touch swipe. All styling lives instyles/fc-toggle-button.css, using only the public--vaadin-switch-*properties.Bindervalidation (HasHelper,HasValidationProperties,Focusable).Build
v25profile is removed and CI runs a single Java 21 job.META-INF/resources/frontend/toMETA-INF/frontend/.vaadin-maven-pluginstill defaultsfrontendResourcesDirectoryto the old location (as of 25.3.1), so it is now configured explicitly; without it, the production build can't find the module. See "Migrating from 1.x" in the README. In short:
HasComponents; usesetLeftIcon/setRightIcon. The component now manages its own children (the inner switch, labels, helper and error message), so a publicadd()/remove()/removeAll()would let callers break that structure, for example removing the switch itself. In 1.x it was only used internally to attach the icons.MEDIUM).Read-only and disabled use the core Switch look (solid border instead of dashed). A checked read-only toggle with a color variant keeps the variant color as a border tint.Read-only and disabled use the core Switch look (in read-only, a solid border instead of dashed). Color variants are kept as in 1.x: a checked read-only toggle shows a desaturated variant color on the border, and a checked disabled toggle a faded variant color on the track.aria-describedby, so screen readers announce it. A tooltip on the whole component would also open over the side labels, but would lose both.color-primary,color-success,color-warning,color-errorandcolor-contrastto thethemeattribute. TheToggleButtonVariantconstants are unchanged; only custom CSS targeting the attribute is affected.Notes for reviewers
Binder: since Flow 24.9.2,Binder'sDefaultBinderValidationErrorHandleradds a theme named after the error level (error,warning, ...) to any field, and removes all of them when the field is valid. With the old variant names, a toggle withERRORorWARNINGbound withBinderlost its color as soon assetBean()validated it. This also affects the released 1.x on Vaadin 24.9.2+, so a 1.x fix may be worth considering.Close #7
