fix(electric): release the shape stream's visibility listener on cleanup - #2257
Electric cleanup now releases the SDK's visibility listener. Previously, each cleanup or managed cache rotation could retain a stopped ShapeStream and its parser, fetch wrappers, and sync state.
We use Electric with TanStack DB in web and Expo applications on iOS and Android. One Expo screen recreated its Collection every minute and retained another stream each time. The listener release started as a local patch in July.
Electric registers a visibilitychange listener when it constructs a stream. SDK versions from 1.5.23 use an AppState subscription on React Native. Aborting the stream stops requests but leaves that listener registered. The returned subscription handle removes only the adapter's callback.
Each Electric provider session owns its stream. Cleanup now calls stream.unsubscribeAll() before aborting the controller. That method removes the callback and the SDK's visibility and wake listeners. The terminal resume and durability failure paths use the same complete release. The adapter no longer stores the returned callback handle or its initial placeholder.
Managed cache rotation follows the same rule. The Electric guide now explicitly requires resource release before replacement construction. Current production already follows that order. The oracle now checks that earlier checkpoint.
Abort still owns request cancellation and pending awaitTxId and awaitMatch waits. Explicit cleanup retains that behavior. Automatic garbage collection during persisting transactions remains the separate concern in #2256.
Production source decreases by three lines and 149 bytes versus main. The production bundle measures −5 bytes brotli and +1 byte gzip. The earlier version measured +15 bytes brotli and +9 bytes gzip. These measurements use external dependencies and the repository's production size comparison.
Oracle Coverage
The primary owner is electric-sdk-delivery-oracle.property.test.ts. It drives the real Collection, Electric adapter, and installed SDK 1.5.15 over controlled HTTP in jsdom.
Law: completed cleanup releases owned resources. Retired session resources must leave before replacement construction. Retired responses cannot write their row into either cache generation or settle replacement demand.
Histories: all three sync modes, one to three runs, partial and complete delivery, reset, retry decisions, abort, cleanup, and restart. Generated rotation histories deliver old responses during rotation, before replacement responses, or after replacement settlement.
Reach: each property runs 40 fixed histories and 40 unseeded histories. Each campaign requires all eight cleanup states and all seven rotation states. The review record contains the measured counts.
RED: base production retains a listener after cleanup and two after rotation. Incorrect release order, early demand settlement, and writes into retired storage fail at their required checkpoints.
GREEN: the current production path passes the complete Electric package. Fixture calibration also checks release during synchronous subscription and after subscription returns.
Limits: these properties use jsdom, controlled HTTP, one installed SDK version, and Map-backed rotation storage. They do not establish native application behavior, every SDK version, arbitrary overlapping rotations, or real SQLite peer claims.
The reference model tracks active sync runs independently of SDK state. The recorder also checks 8,421 bounded histories for callback identity, capture options, and repeated registration. Storage comparisons permit unrelated retained rows while rejecting the expired session's late row.
A separate core CI counterexample exposed an oracle classification error. A fresh include request can start during the commit that also starts truncate replay. The updated oracle observes the initiating request result. It distinguishes that request from reacquisition of an established request. The core production code keeps its existing behavior.
The new core property runs 40 generated pairs per campaign, or 80 concrete histories. Each failure distinction reaches 40 histories. After integration with main, terminal errors must satisfy both the initiating-request observation and an independent retained-demand classification. The merged owner retains all three properties and their fixed and unseeded campaigns. All three guarded direct replay paths pass. An incorrect implementation that makes every replay error terminal fails. Receipt correctness and failure isolation between receivers remain separate limits.
The versioned review record contains exact source identities, review dispositions, counts, replay coordinates, and the evidence for each comparison.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Sync cleanup now releases stream listeners when a stream stops or a replacement starts. This prevents listeners from lingering after an aborted sync.
Cleanup releases retired session resources before replacement streams start. Late responses cannot publish rows or settle waits for the replacement session.
Tests
Expanded coverage for cleanup across sync runs, stream replacement, retries, aborts, and restarts in eager, on-demand, and progressive modes.
Added generated rotation scenarios to check listener release and demand settlement.
Documentation
Updated contributor coverage notes, review records, and collection guidance with validation scope and limitations.
The Electric client registers a visibilitychange listener (AppState on React Native) when a ShapeStream is constructed and removes it only in unsubscribeAll(). Sync cleanup unsubscribed its own callback and aborted the stream, so the listener stayed registered and kept the dead stream reachable. Each cleanup and restart, and each managed cache rotation, retained one more stream.
Cleanup now calls stream.unsubscribeAll(). The stream is private to the sync session, so this affects no other consumer.
A generated lane in the installed-SDK delivery oracle checks that cleanup leaves no listener from a run's streams across eager, on-demand and progressive runs that stay open, give up, abort or restart. The managed cache rotation case checks the retired session.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Session cleanup now releases all listeners on the Electric shape stream before aborting its controller. Generated oracle tests check listener cleanup across sync histories and managed cache rotations. The source-release and rotation-release properties are registered in the oracle configuration and replay manifest.

Release stream listeners during cleanup .changeset/electric-cleanup-stream-listeners.md, packages/electric-db-collection/src/electric.ts, packages/electric-db-collection/tests/*, docs/collections/electric-collection.md
Session cleanup calls stream.unsubscribeAll() after removing the collection listener and before aborting the stream controller. Test doubles expose unsubscribeAll. The collection documentation describes cleanup and replacement-session behavior.
Generated histories check listener cleanup across sync runs, delivery states, and pending retry decisions. The source-release property is registered and documented.
Generated rotation histories check retired-listener release before replacement construction, late retired snapshots, and demands that await replacement responses.

Generate row-only delivery and HTTP 409 reset before cleanup, with replay
examples across modes and terminal outcomes. Release recorded listeners
after failed comparisons and preserve the primary error.
Law: completed sync runs release their resources (CleanupFn and creator guide).
Reach: fixed 40-history campaign reaches partial cleanup in 4 histories and
reset cleanup in 10; the random campaign reaches both too.
RED: old recorder fails actual event dispatch after teardown; original missing
release and both conditional-release variants fail expanded cleanup checks.
GREEN: 1,130 package tests pass with no type errors; lint and builds pass.
Calibration: direct seed/path replay fails each incorrect cleanup variant
and passes unchanged PR production. Production source is unchanged.
Limits: installed SDK, controlled HTTP and jsdom; no native/live-service claim.

Track visibility listeners by ordered callback/capture registrations and
calibrate the recorder against native dispatch over 8,421 bounded histories.
Generate cleanup during held async error decisions, including partial/reset
neighbors and subsequent runs, without changing production behavior.
Law: completed sync cleanup releases adapter-owned resources (CleanupFn and
creator guide); EventTarget identity includes callback and capture.
Reach: pending-decision cleanup reached 18 fixed and 21 random histories;
all eight declared states reached in both normal 40-history campaigns.
RED: native-dispatch calibration fails old recorder; old campaigns accept
wrong-capture SDK removal and conditional pending-decision release.
GREEN: Electric package 1,131 tests pass, one skipped, no type errors;
8,421 calibration histories, lint and formatting pass.
Variant: final oracle rejects wrong-capture SDK removal and four incorrect
release conditions at cleanup assertions; direct replay pairs fail incorrect
code and pass unchanged production.
Limits: installed SDK/jsdom/controlled HTTP and bounded capture histories;
no actual native-host or whole-version-range claim. Retired-session disposal
deadline during rotation remains an explicit policy question, not a new rule.
State the approved Electric resource-release deadline and observe the real SDK
constructor before replacement listeners can register. Generate 1-3 sequential
rotations and three retired-response timings. Check both retained demands stay
pending until replacement source responses; preserve assertion-time values.
Law: user-approved release before replacement construction; existing Electric
scoped-recovery promise completes each demand after its source snapshot applies.
Reach: six rotation states reached in both 40-history campaigns, including
retirement of replacement sessions and demands awaiting replacement.
RED: earlier late comparisons accepted after-constructor disposal and retired
demand early fulfillment. Final comparisons reject both; initial-only disposal
also fails the second rotation. Diagnostic comparison payload drift reproduced.
GREEN: Electric 1133 runtime tests pass, one skipped, no type errors; final
owner 49 runtime + 3 type tests pass; core replay/manifest 38 tests pass.
Variant: exact replay failure/pass pairs; legal disposal after cache rotation
but before construction passes both campaigns. Captured values survive cleanup.
Limits: installed browser SDK/jsdom, controlled HTTP and Map-backed cache,
sequential 1-3 rotations; no native, overlapping, full SDK range or every
private resource claim. Production code is unchanged.

Assert the retired target map as well as the current map.
The oracle retains each generation map, but the existing assertion checks only the current map. If a late retired callback targets its old map, applyCommittedTx can persist oldId there without failing the test. Capture the pre-rotation storageId and assert that its map does not contain oldId. This closes the persistence-coverage gap without claiming that production currently routes such callbacks.

The Electric witness's ShapeStream mock gains `unsubscribeAll`, which
cleanup now calls (#2257). The guide's on-demand example composes
`persistedCollectionOptions` without explicit type arguments, as #2259

Merges main at b8d8ee0 (#2258 GC waits for persisting transactions,
#2257 electric shape-stream listener cleanup).
- lifecycle: main's GC grace/handoff and persisting-transaction hold kept
beside the PR's health state; main's syncError field is replaced by the
PR's statusError.
- load-subset replay oracle: main's keyed-request/reacquisition properties
kept under the PR's request-error law: after initial-query readiness a
fresh keyed request failure is a request error, not terminal, and a failed
replay ends nothing.
- GC retention oracle uses fail() for its first-load failure.
- test:oracles runs both main's GC oracles and the PR's hydration oracle;
mangle cache regenerated.
