fix(sqlite-persistence): make every persisted hydration wait for a reserved commit - #2265
A sync transaction that calls reserveCommitTurn now survives every persisted hydration that would start while it is open. Before this change, a deploy that sent must-refetch to several Electric tabs at once could put their Collections into error with a persisted sync transaction cannot cross a hydration cycle.
The failure
Electric reserves the commit turn of its stream transactions. A must-refetch keeps one reserved transaction open across message batches. The persisted runtime protected that transaction only from a subset load admitted during the reservation. The loadSubset wrapper checked the reservation once, at admission.
Other hydrations did not check it. Each one advanced the hydration sequence that the open transaction depended on, so the commit then rejected:
A subset load admitted before the reservation, which reached hydrateSubsetUnsafe after it.
A peer tab's tx:committed notice with requiresFullReload.
A peer tab's collection:reset.
Sequence-gap recovery, which a peer's refetch commit can start.
Any of these when the shared logical scheduler held its scope after its apply-mutex turn began.
In a refetch storm, each tab commits its refetch and broadcasts it. Every other tab then reloads while its own refetch is still open, and that tab's commit fails. Issue #2226 reports the subset-load path and the peer full-reload path from production. This PR closes those paths and the others in the list.
The repair
The reservation now gates every persisted hydration, at the point where the hydration would start. A hydration that meets an open reservation does not advance the hydration sequence. It releases the apply mutex, waits until the reserved transaction ends, and then starts again. The source's commit therefore lands first and keeps its hydration cycle.
The gate runs in three places in persisted.ts:
hydrateSubsetUnsafe and the hydration-scope task of loadSubset, so a subset load admitted earlier, or one that the scheduler held, also waits.
reloadActiveSubsetsUnsafe and truncateAndReloadUnsafe, before each increments the hydration sequence.
The queue of peer notices. A notice whose processing reaches a hydration stays at the head of the queue and retries after the reservation ends.
While a hydration waits, readers keep the rows from before it. A reset starts its hydration cycle before its truncate. So a reservation that opens during the reset cannot leave an empty Collection on screen until the commit.
A notice that waited can retry as gap recovery, because the reserved commit takes the next stream position. That retry rereads durable rows. It asks the leader only to fill a gap it has not already filled, and sends no added upstream request. Each reservation that the notice waited for can open one gap, so the oracle allows one more pullSince request per wait.
A follower's routed subset load waits for the same reservation before it replies. The load settles only after the owner's rows are visible.
hydrateBaseline now rejects when the caller's own reservation is open. That call would wait on itself.
Connected repairs
The new oracle dimensions, generated histories, and two more high-effort reviews found six more defects near the same path.
Peer resets apply in arrival order. On main, a peer collection:reset ran outside the notice queue. A commit from before the reset could arrive later and apply before the reset set its term fence. That commit then published a row that the reset removed. This defect exists on main without any reservation. Resets now go through the notice queue, so the fence always applies first.
Electric ends its reservation when its stream stops. A hydration that waits needs the reserved transaction to end. An Electric stream that failed for good left its transaction open, so the Collection's hydrations could never run. Electric now abandons the open transaction on every terminal stop. The stops are an error that onError does not retry, the SDK giving up, an external signal abort, resume invalidation, and session cleanup. It commits with an aborted signal, as the reserveCommitTurn contract allows. Each path abandons after the initial-failure decision.
A peer's commit no longer changes a tab's status. The persisted runtime reloads durable rows through a truncate. A truncate marks a Collection ready by default. So on main, a peer's commit could mark a tab ready while its own stream was still loading. It could also move a tab whose initial sync failed from error to ready. The runtime's truncate is now bound once as status-neutral, so only the Collection's own source changes its status.
Gap recovery is one hydration cycle. Gap recovery moved the stream position and applied targeted pullSince deltas. Then a later delta reloaded and deferred for a reserved commit. The retry saw the advanced position and skipped the reload. Now recovery waits for a reserved commit before it asks the leader. It becomes one hydration cycle at the point where it will change rows, before it moves the stream position. A reservation that opens later straddles it. A transaction that did not reserve may still commit while recovery waits for pullSince.
A peer reset abandons an older reservation. A peer reset waited for this tab's open reserved transaction. That transaction's stale commit then landed in the new epoch. A peer's own pre-reset commit was fenced, which made the two cases inconsistent. Now a reset abandons a reserved transaction that began before it. The commit rejects with SyncTransactionAbortedError, and the reset does not wait.
An abandoned reservation stays abandoned. A source could reserve again on a transaction that a peer reset abandoned earlier. A later hydration then waited for a transaction that could never commit. Now an abandoned transaction cannot reserve again. A subset load whose demand aborts also stops being active demand at once, even while it waits for its turn. Before, reloads and targeted invalidation still treated it as live, so a peer change could send an extra pullSince for a demand nobody held.
A follower re-checks after each flush. A follower's routed load waited for the reservation, then flushed the owner's broadcast. A new reservation could open before that flush and defer the broadcast again, so the load settled before the owner's rows were visible. The loop now checks for a reservation after each flush.
Electric marks every reserved transaction open. The progressive atomic swap reserved its transaction but did not mark it open. If user getKey code threw inside the swap, no stop could abandon that transaction, and every hydration waited. Electric's beginSourceTransaction and commitSourceTransaction helpers now own the open flag. This removes five assignments at the call sites.
An abandon releases waiting loads. A subset load admitted during a reservation waited in the wrapper and rejected when the source abandoned the transaction. A load admitted a moment earlier waited in the runtime and ran. Now every waiting load runs after the reservation ends, whether it commits or is abandoned. The admission wait no longer has its own rejection path, because a demand's own abort already rejects its load.
The law and its authority
The reserveCommitTurn contract in packages/db/src/types.ts is the authority. Maintainer decisions on #2226 widened it and set its edges:
Every persisted hydration that would start during the reservation waits for the commit.
While a hydration waits, readers keep the rows from before it. A transaction that starts after a hydration started straddles it.
A notice that waited may retry as gap recovery. A tab asks the leader only to fill a gap it has not already filled, and sends no added upstream request. The oracle checks this as at most one more pullSince request per wait, because each wait can open one gap. This decision was made on this PR.
A source that stops for good must end its reserved transaction. It commits or abandons it.
A persisted Collection in error keeps showing durable rows. It still applies its peers' durable commits. This decision was made on this PR.
A Collection status changes only through its own source. A peer's durable commit reloads the rows but leaves a loading or failed tab as it is. This decision was made on this PR.
An abandon releases the waiting hydrations as a commit does, so they run. This decision was made on this PR.
A source must not await a hydrateBaseline that it started before reserving while the reservation is open, because that baseline waits for the commit. The contract states this obligation, and the runtime cannot detect a breach. This decision was made on this PR.
A peer reset abandons a reserved transaction that began before it. This decision was made on this PR.
Sequence-gap recovery counts as a hydration only from the point where it changes rows. This decision was made on this PR.
No fairness rule applies: a hydration that a commit released waits again for a reservation that opens before its next turn. This decision was made on this PR, and the coverage map records it as a known limit.
The glossary now defines "reserved sync transaction".
Evidence
Three oracles own the law, and docs/contributing/oracle-coverage.md records each one with its limits.
Persisted-reads grammar (persisted-oracle.test.ts). One driver crosses these dimensions:
Route: subset, complete subset, routed subset, source baseline, reset, full reload, and sequence gap. A gap recovers without pullSince, through a pullSince full reload, or through pullSince deltas that reload partway through. A targeted change that starts no hydration is a control.
Timing: the reservation opens after the read, before a subset load's admission, across the mutex turn, or across scope entry. It can also open during the read, in the first publication, or across startup.
Ending: commits, abandoned, cleanup, an aborted demand, or the source awaiting its own baseline.
Follow-up: none, a reset followed by a commit from before it, or a reset, a new reservation, and then that commit. After an aborted demand, a peer change can also follow.
Follower window, a third registration: the owner's reply is held. The source then commits after 0 to 8 microtasks and reserves an empty second transaction after 0 to 12 more.
Each read must equal the fold of the durable events before it. The comparison also checks receipts, final rows, row metadata, cursor, status, upstream requests, the pullSince bound, and rows while a hydration waits. Every cell declares reach (ORC-015). This grammar replaces the earlier named witnesses.
Real SQLite adapter (reserved-commit-sqlite-adapter-oracle.test.ts). This oracle has three routes: peer full reload, peer reset, and a subset admitted earlier. It crosses them with two timings and two endings. A timing is a held write, or the shared scheduler holding the scope. It runs on SQLiteCorePersistenceAdapter over node:sqlite.
Browser multi-tab Electric (multi-tab-electric-oracle.test.ts). It runs real BrowserCollectionCoordinator tabs with a mocked ShapeStream. It crosses two or three tabs, eager or on-demand Collections, which tab finishes first, and storm or staggered arrival. It also crosses the last tab's open reserved transaction: its refetch, or an ordinary batch after the tab resumed. The source then stops for good in one of five ways. The stops are an error that onError does not retry, the SDK giving up, a signal abort, cleanup, and resume invalidation. Last, the application recovers the tab by a restart in the page or by a reload. The oracle judges every tab after every source stops, and again after recovery. It also checks that a tab requests a full snapshot after resume invalidation.
Check
Result
RED on 5649a07d4 (main at branch point)
Every cell where the reservation is open fails with a persisted sync transaction cannot cross a hydration cycle. Three after-read reset follow-up cells fail from the reset-order defect. All 5 committing adapter cells fail. Every ordinary storm cell fails.
RED without Electric's abandon
Removing the abandon on the onError, give-up, or signal-abort path fails 12 cells each.
GREEN, grammar
677 cells pass across both registrations.
RED, third review
On 2047f4281, 53 reset cells and 12 pullSince cells fail. Abandoning only at the reset's turn fails 6 cells, and abandoning only on arrival fails 40. Dropping the reservation check after pullSince fails 8. The real-adapter oracle fails both committing peer-reset cells.
RED, second review
On 851e8d9da, 28 gap-delta cells and the 2 abandoned admission cells fail. A gate only at recovery start still fails 15 cells. Reloads that start their own cycle inside recovery fail 61 cells.
GREEN, adapter
10 cells pass. Each subset cell also judges that the waited load succeeds.
GREEN, Browser
290 storm cells and both generated campaigns pass. Law 2 is now a final check of the generated histories, which may commit a prefix of what a stream owes. The #2209 and #2267 histories replay through the same driver and checks as it.fails.
Suites after the main merge
db-sqlite-persistence-core 1449 pass (1 todo). electric-db-collection 713 pass. The Browser oracle files 38 pass. Type checks pass. After the review repairs and a merge of main, electric-db-collection passes 1136 and browser-db-sqlite-persistence passes 834.
RED, sixth review
On 7a6f32fd7, 8 re-reserve cells fail with a hydration that waits for the abandoned transaction. 12 of the 24 aborted-demand cells fail: a reset reads for the aborted demand, and a peer change sends a pullSince past the bound. A reload-only filter for aborted demand still fails 4. In the follower-window registration, 12 of 117 cells settle the routed load before the owner's row is public. In those cells the source commits 3 microtasks after the owner replies, then reserves again. The Electric failed-swap witness in the descriptor tests times out.
Suites after the merge of main (#2278), at b24fd6159
db-sqlite-persistence-core 2465 pass (1 todo). electric-db-collection 736 pass. browser-db-sqlite-persistence 651 pass. The oracle lint passes: the persisted-reads, real-adapter, and Browser multi-tab oracles each declare their check, model, and grammar.
Hostile mutants
Each mutant fails at least one cell with an assertion.
The mutants and the cells that kill them:
Defer every notice: the targeted change fails.
Drop the follower reply's wait: the routed subset fails.
Report hydration start before the gate: the aborted demand fails.
Let a reset's reload start its own cycle: the first-publication reset fails.
Apply a reset outside the notice queue: the reset follow-ups fail.
Retry a waited notice while the reservation is open: the follow-up and routed cells fail on repeated pullSince requests.
Requeue a waited notice behind later notices: 12 reset follow-up cells fail. The pre-reset commit publishes before its reset, and one reload is lost.
Gate only at the mutex turn: every scope-entry cell fails.
Gate only subset hydration: every reset, reload, and gap cell fails.
Reject a waited subset load after the reservation ends: the 4 adapter subset cells fail.
Remove one Electric abandon (onError, give-up, or signal abort): 12 storm cells fail for each.
Remove cleanup's abandon: the Electric descriptor-isolation oracle fails. The persisted wrapper ends its transactions on cleanup, so the Browser oracle cannot detect this mutant.
Remove resume invalidation's abandon: 16 storm cells fail. A Collection in error must still show durable rows, so the tab must show its peers' refetch.
Generated multi-tab histories (same file). Each history interleaves server changes, deploys, partial and complete deliveries, every stop except resume invalidation, restarts, and reloads, across two or three eager tabs. The model folds the committed batches into the expected durable rows. After every step, the oracle compares the durable rows, every Collection status, and the rows of each tab with no open transaction. It compares them again after every tab catches up. A constant seed and a random seed run 60 histories each, and the shared TANSTACK_DB_ORACLE_SEED, _PATH, and _PROPERTY variables replay one.
Every campaign reaches every declared premise. One premise is a peer commit during an open reserved transaction. Another is a peer commit after each kind of stop in the middle of a transaction.
The constant seed fails on the readiness defect without its repair.
Removing the reservation gate fails both campaigns. Removing the onError, give-up, or signal-abort abandon also fails both campaigns.
The histories found Electric resume check puts a lagging tab in error when a peer deleted the row it updates #2267, which already exists on main. A resumed tab that lags behind a peer can receive an update for a row that the peer already removed. Electric's resume check then puts the Collection in error. The generated histories leave that case out, and an it.fails replay pins it.
Limits
forceReloadSubset keeps the ungated mutex turn. Only a Collection without sync exposes it, so it cannot meet a reservation.
The lagging-tab case where the lagging tab closes first stays an it.fails known gap (Persisted multi-tab: order source transactions by server position #2209). Nothing sends the head row again to the tab that applied it. Ordering source writes by server position can close it. That work is out of scope here.
On-demand storm cells judge receipts and status only. The generated histories use eager tabs only.
Checkpoints wait for host quiescence, not a completion signal, because the public API exposes none for peer notices. Declared reach and the mutants above calibrate those checkpoints.
The adapter oracle excludes a peer full reload behind this Collection's held write. The single SQLite writer cannot make that reload durable. The grammar's fixture leader covers that route instead.
Cells that end with cleanup judge only cleanup.

The persistence package grows because it gains the wait-and-retry path for hydrations and queued notices. These attempts did not remove that growth:
I removed a stream-position restore for a waited notice. Deferred retries make it equivalent.
One refactor removed the wrapper's FIFO admission wait in favor of the runtime gate. 4 FIFO-turn cells failed, so the wait stays, with a comment that explains its role.
A reload-only filter for aborted demand cost less, but 4 cells showed that it misses targeted invalidation. Removing the demand when its signal aborts costs 38 B more and replaces the filter.
The admission waiters became plain release callbacks, because their rejection path was unreachable.
Electric's three end-of-transaction sites now share one abandonOpenTransaction helper, so its gzip size drops by 6 B.
The readiness repair binds the runtime's truncate once instead of passing an option at each call site, and saves 5 B.
Local test notes
persisted-real-adapter-lifecycle.test.ts and sqlite-core-adapter-cli-runtime.test.ts timed out on a heavily loaded machine. The same tests also time out with main's persisted.ts under the same load. In @tanstack/db, the only change is a doc comment.

Bug Fixes
Persisted data loads, reloads, and recovery operations now wait for reserved sync transactions to finish, helping prevent inconsistent results during overlapping updates.
Waiting subset loads are released when a reserved transaction is abandoned instead of failing with an error.
Peer resets are applied in arrival order, and open transactions are properly abandoned when a data stream stops permanently.
Reloads from another tab preserve the persisted Collection’s status.
Documentation
Clarified how reserved sync transactions interact with persisted hydration.
…served commit
A sync transaction that called reserveCommitTurn only kept subset loads
admitted during the reservation from crossing it. A subset load admitted
earlier, a peer reload or reset, sequence-gap recovery, or a hydration
held by the shared scheduler advanced the hydration cycle, and the
commit rejected with "a persisted sync transaction cannot cross a
hydration cycle" (#2226).
Every persisted hydration now waits outside the apply mutex until the
reserved transaction ends. Peer resets go through the notice queue, so
a pre-reset commit can no longer publish a row the reset removed.
Electric abandons its open transaction when its stream stops for good.
The persisted-reads grammar, a real-adapter oracle and a Browser
multi-tab oracle own the widened law.

Explanation
The title "fix(sqlite-persistence): make every persisted hydration wait for a reserved commit" matches the main change in the changeset. The raw summary and objectives show that persisted hydrations (subset loads, reloads, resets, gap recovery, scheduler-delayed work) now wait for a reserved sync transaction to commit before advancing the hydration sequence. The title is concise, specific, and follows the conventional commit style. It does not cover the secondary changes (peer reset ordering, Electric abandon, status neutrality), which is expected for a title.

Explanation
The PR meets the coding requirements in [#2226]. persisted.ts gates hydration at start and retries after the reserved commit. The gate covers subset loads, peer reloads, peer resets, sequence-gap recovery, and scheduler-delayed work. Deferred notices remain at the queue head. electric.ts ends reserved transactions on terminal stops. The reported grammar, SQLite adapter, Browser oracle, regression, and type-check results provide automated coverage.

Close the reserved transaction on terminal stream errors and external aborts.
The stream.subscribe error callback does not call abandonOpenTransaction(). forwardExternalAbort only aborts the controller and reports the initial failure. The abort listener rejects the full snapshot and retires the lifecycle, but it does not clear transactionStarted.
Without cleanup, the reserved transaction can remain open and block persisted work behind its reservation. Move the existing helper before forwardExternalAbort, so an already-aborted signal safely sees transactionStarted === false, then call it in both paths.

Update the stream error callback and forwardExternalAbort to call
abandonOpenTransaction() so terminal stream errors and external aborts release
any reserved transaction. Define the helper and transactionStarted before
forwardExternalAbort so an already-aborted signal safely encounters an unstarted

Split runPersistedReadHistory into separate model, fixture, and driver functions.
This one closure is about 950 lines long. It mixes four separate parts:
Adapter and coordinator fixture:leaderPosition, peerCommit, the read recorders, and the routed-owner ensure.
Timing driver: the commitTiming branches.
Independent model:expectedRows, expectedPublicRows, sharedMetadata, expectedCursor, expectedReadCount, and expectedSourceLoads.
Trace fold:applyDurableEvent, durableBefore, and observedReadOrder.
The model is the oracle for 548 cells. It reads only PersistedReadHistory, so it can be a pure function such as expectedPersistedReadOutcome(history). A pure function separates the model from production observations and makes the model easy to review and to test with a hostile answer, as other grammars in this file already do. The fixture builder can return the recorders and gates the driver needs.

Electric abandoned its open transaction only when onError gave no retry
and on cleanup. When the SDK gave up its own retries, or the
application's signal aborted the stream, the reservation stayed open,
so hydrations that wait for it never ran. Both paths now abandon after
the initial-failure decision.
The multi-tab Electric oracle crosses every terminal stop path. Its
eager storm cells for the two new paths fail without the repair. The
Electric retry oracle's commit wrapper now passes the source's signal
through, as a real persistence wrapper does.
The real-adapter oracle now judges that a waited subset load succeeds;
a mutant that rejects it passed before. The persisted-reads model is
now a pure function of the history, separate from the driver.

…the multi-tab oracle
The storm grammar now crosses the stopped tab's open reserved transaction
(its refetch, or an ordinary batch after a resume), every terminal stop
(onError without retry, SDK give-up, signal abort, cleanup, resume
invalidation), and the application's recovery (restart in the page, or a
reload over the same database). It judges every tab at two checkpoints
and the full-snapshot request after resume invalidation. The mocked
stream gains unsubscribeAll, which main's Electric now calls, and rejects
delivery to a stopped stream.

…esume invalidation
Maintainer decision on this PR: a persisted Collection in `error` keeps
showing durable rows, because it still applies its peers' durable
commits. The multi-tab oracle now judges the rows of the tab that resume
invalidation put in `error`. Removing Electric's abandon in
invalidateResume now fails 16 storm cells.
Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
…reloads rows
Maintainer decision on PR #2265: a Collection status changes only through
its own source. The persisted runtime reloaded durable rows through a
truncate that marks a Collection ready by default, so a peer's commit
could mark a loading tab ready or move a failed tab from error to ready.
The runtime's truncate is now status-neutral where it is bound.
The multi-tab Electric oracle gains generated histories (fixed and random
campaigns, seed and path replay). They interleave server changes,
deploys, partial and complete deliveries, every non-invalidating stop,
restarts, and reloads, and judge the durable rows against a fold of
committed batches, every Collection status, and idle tabs' rows after
every step. The fixed seed fails without the repair; removing the
reservation gate or any of three Electric abandons fails both campaigns.
They found #2267, which is pinned with it.fails and left out of the
generated histories.

Review finding: gap recovery advanced the stream position and applied
targeted pullSince deltas before a later delta's reload deferred for a
reserved commit, so the retried notice skipped the reload. Gap recovery
now waits for a reserved commit before its first step and is one
hydration cycle from there; a reservation that opens later straddles it.
The persisted-reads grammar gains a gap route whose pullSince deltas
reload partway through. It failed 28 cells on the parent; a gate only at
recovery start still failed 15, and reloads that start their own cycle
inside recovery fail 61.
The multi-tab generated histories now judge Law 2: deliveries may commit
a prefix of what a stream owes, and after every open tab catches up the
durable rows and every tab show the server head. The #2209 history
replays through the same driver and checks with it.fails, replacing the
pinned lagging examples that carried their own expected answers.
Electric clears its open-transaction flag before it commits, and the
persisted wrapper uses one reservation lookup for subset admission.

…abandoned
Maintainer decision on PR #2265: an abandoned reservation releases the
subset loads that waited for it, as a commit does. A load admitted while
the turn was reserved waited in the wrapper and rejected on abandon,
while a load admitted a moment earlier waited in the runtime and ran.
The persisted-reads grammar gains a timing that reserves before a subset
load is admitted. Its abandoned cells failed on the parent with a
rejected load. The admission wait now only resolves; a demand's own abort
still rejects its load through the retained-load race, which makes the
wait's separate rejection path redundant, so it is removed.
The reserveCommitTurn contract now states that an abandon releases
waiting hydrations, and that a source must not await a baseline it
started before reserving while the reservation is open (maintainer
decision on PR #2265).

Maintainer decisions on PR #2265, from the third review:
- A peer reset abandons a reserved transaction that began before it. Its
writes are dropped and its commit rejects with SyncTransactionAbortedError,
so no pre-reset rows reach the new epoch; the reset does not wait. Before,
the reset waited and the stale commit landed, while a peer's pre-reset
commit was fenced. The grammar failed 53 cells on the parent; abandoning
only at the reset's turn fails 6 follow-up cells, only on arrival 40.
- Gap recovery is a hydration cycle only from the point where it will
change rows: after pullSince answers, or at its reload without pullSince.
An unreserved transaction may commit during pullSince, and a reservation
opened then makes recovery wait. Two new pullSince timings failed 12
cells on the parent; dropping the check after pullSince fails 8.
- No fairness rule for hydrations released by a commit; recorded as a
known limit.
The model now folds the expected rows, metadata, and cursor over the source
steps that apply, which a reset that abandons a first step needs. The
follower's reply waits only for a head notice that waits, and gap recovery
names its in-cycle reload once.
Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
…d multi-tab histories
The generated histories gain a peer collection:reset step, posted on the
tabs' coordinator channel because no shipped host sends one yet. The reset
abandons every open reserved transaction. Electric still holds it, so its
next commit rejects and the Collection goes to error until the app restarts
it (maintainer decision on PR #2265, Law 5). A reset that waits and accepts
the stale commit fails both campaigns. The budget rises to 80 runs so every
declared premise stays reached.
Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
Review finding: the reset abandoned only the first reserved transaction on
the stack, so a nested reserved transaction kept its reservation and later
rejected with the cross-cycle error instead of the reset's abort. The
real-adapter oracle gains a nesting dimension; its two nested peer-reset
commit cells failed on the parent and pass now.
Every wait for one reservation now shares one promise, so repeated checks
no longer add waiters, and the notices that wait behind one reservation
share one deferred flush. Positional flags are named at their call sites.
Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
Maintainer decision on PR #2265: awaitTxId keeps its evidence meaning. It
resolves when the txid appears in the stream, before persistence accepts
the commit; a commit that later rejects puts the Collection in error. The
coverage map records the limit.
Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
#2168 splits Collection status from sync errors: after readiness a source
failure keeps the Collection ready and records the error on its health
node, and `error` means only a failed first load. Resume invalidation and
a reset-abandoned commit happen after readiness, so the multi-tab oracle
now expects `ready` with a health error there, and `error` only when the
first load failed. Law 3 and Law 5 prose follow. Removing Electric's
failure on a rejected commit fails both generated campaigns.
Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
…er's notice applies
Review finding: the follower's reply loop stopped when its reservation
ended between the flush and the wait check, while the owner's notice was
still deferred, so the load settled before the owner's row was public
(law 7). The loop now waits while the head notice is deferred. The
persisted-reads grammar judges law 7 at the routed load's settlement; a
temporary hook that ended the reservation in that window failed 4
straddled cells on the old loop and passes on the new one.
The grammar also gains a peer reset for a retired storage generation,
which abandons nothing. One sentinel signals every deferral, and a
beginHydrationCycle helper pairs the reservation check with the sequence
step.
Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
A random CI campaign found a history the model got wrong: a peer
committed an update and then a delete of a row, and a lagging tab then
delivered only the update. Electric's updates carry only changed columns
by default, so an update cannot create a row the tab no longer holds, and
Electric drops it. The fold now applies the same rule; a resumed tab in
that position stays the #2267 known gap. Both mutants still fail both
campaigns.
Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
- A follower's routed load checks for a new reservation after each flush,
so a reservation that opens before the flush cannot settle the load
before the owner's broadcast applies.
- A transaction that a peer reset abandoned cannot reserve again.
- A reset's reload skips an aborted demand still waiting for its turn.
- Electric's begin and commit helpers own transactionStarted, so the
progressive swap's reserved transaction is abandoned when the source
stops.
- Admission waiters are plain release callbacks; their rejection path
was unreachable.
The persisted-reads grammar gains a re-reserve follow-up and a reset
follow-up for aborted demands. The Electric descriptor-isolation oracle
gains a failed-swap give-up witness.
Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
An aborted subset load that waited for its hydration turn stayed in the
active subsets until its turn came. Reloads and targeted invalidation
treated it as live demand, so a peer change could reach the leader for a
demand nobody held. The load now leaves the active subsets when its
signal aborts, which replaces the reload-only filter.
The persisted-reads grammar gains a peer change after the abort, and
judges reach after its comparison so an unexpected read fails as an
assertion. The coverage map records the follower window that no public
timing reaches.
Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
A follower's routed load must settle only after the owner's broadcast
applies, even when the source ends its reservation and reserves again
while the broadcast waits. The persisted-reads grammar gains a third
registration: the owner's reply is held, then the source commits and
reserves an empty second transaction after 0 to 8 and 0 to 6
microtasks. The loop from before the re-check settles the load early
in the 6 cells that commit 3 microtasks after the reply; all 63 cells
pass on the current loop.
Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
Maintainer decision on PR #2265: a notice that waited may send one more
pullSince for each reservation it waited for. The model's bound now
counts the second reservation that can hold a follower's owner notice,
and the follower-window registration widens its second delay to 0 to 12
microtasks. All 117 cells pass; on 7a6f32f the 12 cells that commit
3 microtasks after the owner's reply settle the routed load early.

A tab asks the leader only to fill a gap it has not already filled. The
per-wait count is how the oracle checks that law: each reservation a
notice waited for can open one gap. Comments and the coverage map only.

Brings in #2278, which splits the persisted and Electric descriptor test
files and requires every oracle test to reach a declared part.
- The persisted-reads grammar, which this branch turned into an oracle
with an independent model, stays in persisted-oracle.test.ts and
declares its check, model, and grammar. Main's unchanged copy of the
older grammar leaves persisted-reload-metadata.test.ts.
- The fail-stop coordinator harness's storage-ID emit moves to
persisted-support.ts.
- The failed-swap give-up witness moves to the ordinary descriptor
tests, and the harness exposes the SDK's give-up callback.
- The real-adapter and Browser multi-tab oracles name their drivers,
model, and grammar with declareOracle.

Brings in #2262 and #2265. The only conflict was the generated mangle
cache, which was rebuilt from main's version with
scripts/mangle-private-members.mjs --write.

A sync transaction that calls
reserveCommitTurnnow survives every persisted hydration that would start while it is open. Before this change, a deploy that sent must-refetch to several Electric tabs at once could put their Collections intoerrorwitha persisted sync transaction cannot cross a hydration cycle. The failure
Electric reserves the commit turn of its stream transactions. A must-refetch keeps one reserved transaction open across message batches. The persisted runtime protected that transaction only from a subset load admitted during the reservation. The
loadSubsetwrapper checked the reservation once, at admission.Other hydrations did not check it. Each one advanced the hydration sequence that the open transaction depended on, so the commit then rejected:
hydrateSubsetUnsafeafter it.tx:committednotice withrequiresFullReload.collection:reset.In a refetch storm, each tab commits its refetch and broadcasts it.
The gate runs in three places in
persisted.ts:hydrateSubsetUnsafeand the hydration-scope task ofloadSubset, so a subset load admitted earlier, or one that the scheduler held, also waits.reloadActiveSubsetsUnsafeandtruncateAndReloadUnsafe, before each increments the hydration sequence.
Each reservation that the notice waited for can open one gap, so the oracle allows one more
pullSincerequest per wait.A follower's routed subset load waits for the same reservation before it replies. The load settles only after the owner's rows are visible.
hydrateBaselinenow rejects when the caller's own reservation is open. That call would wait on itself.Connected repairs
The new oracle dimensions, generated histories, and two more high-effort reviews found six more defects near the same path.
Peer resets apply in arrival order. On
main, a peercollection:resetran outside the notice queue. A commit from before the reset could arrive later and apply before the reset set its term fence. That commit then published a row that the reset removed. This defect exists onmainwithout any reservation. Resets now go through the notice queue, so the fence always applies first.Electric ends its reservation when its stream stops. A hydration that waits needs the reserved transaction to end. An Electric stream that failed for good left its transaction open, so the Collection's hydrations could never run. Electric now abandons the open transaction on every terminal stop. The stops are an error that
onErrordoes not retry, the SDK giving up, an external signal abort, resume invalidation, and session cleanup. It commits with an aborted signal, as thereserveCommitTurncontract allows. Each path abandons after the initial-failure decision.A peer's commit no longer changes a tab's status. The persisted runtime reloads durable rows through a truncate. A truncate marks a Collection ready by default. So on
main, a peer's commit could mark a tabreadywhile its own stream was still loading. It could also move a tab whose initial sync failed fromerrortoready. The runtime's truncate is now bound once as status-neutral, so only the Collection's own source changes its status.Gap recovery is one hydration cycle. Gap recovery moved the stream position and applied targeted
pullSincedeltas. A transaction that did not reserve may still commit while recovery waits forpullSince.A peer reset abandons an older reservation. A peer reset waited for this tab's open reserved transaction. That transaction's stale commit then landed in the new epoch. A peer's own pre-reset commit was fenced, which made the two cases inconsistent. Now a reset abandons a reserved transaction that began before it. The commit rejects with
SyncTransactionAbortedError, and the reset does not wait.An abandoned reservation stays abandoned. A source could reserve again on a transaction that a peer reset abandoned earlier. A later hydration then waited for a transaction that could never commit. Now an abandoned transaction cannot reserve again. A subset load whose demand aborts also stops being active demand at once, even while it waits for its turn. Before, reloads and targeted invalidation still treated it as live, so a peer change could send an extra
pullSincefor a demand nobody held.A follower re-checks after each flush.
If user
getKeycode threw inside the swap, no stop could abandon that transaction, and every hydration waited. Electric'sbeginSourceTransactionandcommitSourceTransactionhelpers now own the open flag.
The
reserveCommitTurncontract inpackages/db/src/types.tsis the authority. Maintainer decisions on #2226 widened it and set its edges:pullSincerequest per wait, because each wait can open one gap. This decision was made on this PR.errorkeeps showing durable rows. It still applies its peers' durable commits. This decision was made on this PR.loadingor failed tab as it is. This decision was made on this PR.hydrateBaselinethat it started before reserving while the reservation is open, because that baseline waits for the commit. The contract states this obligation, and the runtime cannot detect a breach. This decision was made on this PR.The glossary now defines "reserved sync transaction".
Evidence
Three oracles own the law, and
docs/contributing/oracle-coverage.mdrecords each one with its limits.Persisted-reads grammar (
persisted-oracle.test.ts). One driver crosses these dimensions:pullSince, through apullSincefull reload, or throughpullSincedeltas that reload partway through. A targeted change that starts no hydration is a control. Each read must equal the fold of the durable events before it. The comparison also checks receipts, final rows, row metadata, cursor, status, upstream requests, the
pullSincebound, and rows while a hydration waits. Every cell declares reach (ORC-015). This grammar replaces the earlier named witnesses.Real SQLite adapter (
reserved-commit-sqlite-adapter-oracle.test.ts). This oracle has three routes: peer full reload, peer reset, and a subset admitted earlier. It crosses them with two timings and two endings. A timing is a held write, or the shared scheduler holding the scope. It runs onSQLiteCorePersistenceAdapterovernode:sqlite.Browser multi-tab Electric (
multi-tab-electric-oracle.test.ts). It runs realBrowserCollectionCoordinatortabs with a mockedShapeStream. It crosses two or three tabs, eager or on-demand Collections, which tab finishes first, and storm or staggered arrival. It also crosses the last tab's open reserved transaction: its refetch, or an ordinary batch after the tab resumed. The source then stops for good in one of five ways. The stops are an error thatonErrordoes not retry, the SDK giving up, a signal abort, cleanup, and resume invalidation. Last, the application recovers the tab by a restart in the page or by a reload. The oracle judges every tab after every source stops, and again after recovery. It also checks that a tab requests a full snapshot after resume invalidation.5649a07d4(mainat branch point)a persisted sync transaction cannot cross a hydration cycle. Three after-read reset follow-up cells fail from the reset-order defect. All 5 committing adapter cells fail. Abandoning only at the reset's turn fails 6 cells, and abandoning only on arrival fails 40. Dropping the reservation check afterpullSincefails 8. The real-adapter oracle fails both committing peer-reset cells.851e8d9da, 28 gap-delta cells and the 2 abandoned admission cells fail. A gate only at recovery start still fails 15 cells. After the review repairs and a merge ofmain,electric-db-collectionpasses 1136 andbrowser-db-sqlite-persistencepasses 834.7a6f32fd7, 8 re-reserve cells fail with a hydration that waits for the abandoned transaction. 12 of the 24 aborted-demand cells fail: a reset reads for the aborted demand, and a peer change sends apullSincepast the bound. A reload-only filter for aborted demand still fails 4. In the follower-window registration, 12 of 117 cells settle the routed load before the owner's row is public. In those cells the source commits 3 microtasks after the owner replies, then reserves again. The oracle lint passes: the persisted-reads, real-adapter, and Browser multi-tab oracles each declare their check, model, and grammar. The mutants and the cells that kill them:
pullSincerequests.onError, give-up, or signal abort): 12 storm cells fail for each.errormust still show durable rows, so the tab must show its peers' refetch.Generated multi-tab histories (same file). A constant seed and a random seed run 60 histories each, and the shared
TANSTACK_DB_ORACLE_SEED,_PATH, and_PROPERTYvariables replay one.onError, give-up, or signal-abort abandon also fails both campaigns.main. A resumed tab that lags behind a peer can receive an update for a row that the peer already removed. Electric's resume check then puts the Collection inerror. The generated histories leave that case out, and anit.failsreplay pins it.Limits
