🎯 Changes

Part of #2117: the skipInitial: false consumer item.

This change adds an effect-initial-rows consumer to Model D in packages/db/tests/query/includes-temporal-oracle.test.ts. It is an Effect without skipInitial over a lagging source. It changes only tests and docs; no production code changes.

  • Law: an Effect without skipInitial passes the same initial gate, but the gate holds no callback. So its callback-visible result equals the query's current result at every checkpoint, before initial-query readiness too.
  • Authority: ARCHITECTURE.md, "Effects and initial readiness":
    • skipInitial "only decides whether the initial rows are delivered".
    • "Other ordinary initial/refinement requests keep their existing callback timing".
  • Observation: the callback-visible result, rebuilt from enter, exit, and update events. The recorder also counts inconsistent events (an enter for a visible key, or an exit or update for an absent key), so a duplicate or lost delta reaches the comparison.
    • Between a truncate and its settlement, the model does not judge the rows, because the replay barrier owns publication there. The metamorphic twin still compares those checkpoints.
  • Histories: the same 156 as the skipInitial Effect lane: direct, lazy join, eager-root, and eager-default, each crossed with truncate and rekey disturbances.

Question for review: the gate sentence ("Every Effect passes its gate there too, with or without skipInitial") could also be read as holding initial rows until readiness. I followed the callback-timing sentence, which matches current production. If the other reading is intended, the model rule to change is expectedInitialRowsEffectObservation.

🔬 Oracle Coverage

Owner: "Includes and publication" → temporal oracle, Model D. The coverage-map row is updated. The evidence is appended to the review record docs/contributing/oracle-reviews/progressive-source-readiness.md ("Effect without skipInitial round").

  • Reach: declared with createOracleReach, and asserted after the bounded exhaustive cells.

    • Rows visible before initial-query readiness: 117 cells.
    • A row written after readiness is visible: 46 cells.
    • Truncate replay before settlement: 80 cells.
  • RED: none. This change adds coverage under an unchanged contract, and production already conforms.

  • GREEN: npx vitest run tests/query/includes-temporal-oracle.test.ts passes 1084 of 1084 tests, with no type errors.

  • Mutants: each was run against all of Model D in src/query/effect.ts. Only the new cells reject either mutant. Every existing lane, including the skipInitial Effect lane, passes both.

    Mutant Rejecting cells
Without skipInitial, hold callbacks until the gate (if (!this.skipInitial && !this.reachedReady) return in flushPendingChanges) 152 of 156: 52 direct, 92 join, 4 eager-root, 4 eager-default. Assertion failures at checkpoints 1–5.
Ignore skipInitial: false, so initial rows are dropped (this.skipInitial = true) The same 152 cells

The 4 survivors are eager histories that start with source-ready. No row is visible before readiness there, so both mutants are equivalent within those histories.

  • Limits: these remain open. They are listed in the review record and in Extend the Effect skipInitial oracle lane: ordered windows, includes, failures, and ordinary Effects #2117.

    • Effects without skipInitial over an ordered window, an include, or a single result.
    • useLiveQueryEffect.

✅ Checklist

  • I have tested this code locally with pnpm test. I ran the changed oracle file in full (1084 tests pass) and pnpm lint:changed.

🚀 Release Impact

  • This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
  • This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests

    • Expanded coverage for Effects that do not use skipInitial, including their visible query results and callback behavior before readiness, after writes, and during truncate replay.
    • Added checks across direct, joined, and eager-source query shapes.
  • Documentation

    • Updated contributor guidance to describe how Effects without skipInitial expose query results at each checkpoint.

…Model D

Add an effect-initial-rows consumer to the includes temporal oracle. Without
skipInitial an Effect keeps its ordinary callback timing, so its
callback-visible result must equal the query's current result at every
checkpoint, before initial-query readiness too. The lane rejects an Effect
that holds or drops its initial deltas until readiness; no other Model D lane
did.

Walkthrough

The temporal source-readiness oracle now models callback-visible rows for an Effect without skipInitial. Its traces cover pre-readiness and later writes, track required observation states, and document the new coverage.

Changes: Effect readiness observations

Layer / File(s) Summary
Model callback-visible rows
packages/db/tests/query/includes-temporal-oracle.test.ts
The model adds an Effect consumer without skipInitial. It records visible rows, event consistency, and acquisition counts, and compares these observations with expected results.
Trace reach and coverage
packages/db/tests/query/includes-temporal-oracle.test.ts, docs/contributing/oracle-reviews/progressive-source-readiness.md, docs/contributing/oracle-coverage.md
Direct, join, and eager-root traces include the new consumer. Reach checks cover rows visible before readiness, writes after readiness, and truncate replay before settlement. The documentation describes the 156-history grammar, observed events, mutant outcomes, and coverage boundaries.

Compare joined row values, not only post IDs.

The Effect contract treats a present-to-present value change as an update. The join query returns id: user.id, but this consumer compares only row counts and post IDs. A rekey from parent 2 to 3 can therefore leave a stale parent ID undetected. This is a missing regression-coverage gap, not an established production failure.

Suggested fix
 type InitialRowsEffectObservation = {
- visible: { rows: number; postIds: Array<number> } | null
+  visible: {
+ rows: number
+ postIds: Array<number>
+ parentIds: Array<number>
+ } | null
   inconsistentEvents: number
   acquisitions: number
 }

Add the join row IDs to both expectedInitialRowsEffectObservation and observeLaggingSourceConsumer, using facts.parentId for the expected join rows and row.id for the observed join rows.
