🎯 Changes

compareDeep could report two different Sets as equal:

  1. Elements matched more than once. Each element of A was checked with [...objB].some(...), so new Set([{ x: 1 }, { x: 1 }]) matched new Set([{ x: 1 }, { x: 2 }]), because both elements matched B's { x: 1 }.
  2. Failed comparisons cached as equal. The circular-reference guard added every (a, b) pair to seen and never removed it. A failed .some() attempt therefore left its pair in seen, so a later comparison of the same pair returned true (for example, [new Set([p, q]), p] vs [new Set([q2, p2]), q2]).

Fix:

  • Deep Set comparison now uses a list of B's unmatched elements. Each element of A takes one of them: an identical reference if there is one, otherwise the first deep-equal element. Greedy matching is enough here because deep equality is transitive.
  • A (a, b) pair is assumed equal only while it is still being compared further up the stack, which is all the cycle guard needs. It is released afterwards with try/finally. To keep the code readable, the per-type comparison moved into _evaluateObjects. Shallow mode is unchanged.

Testing:

  • Added should match each Set element at most once and should not remember failed Set element comparisons as equal to packages/store/tests/compare.spec.ts. Both fail on main and pass with this change.
  • @tanstack/store on Node 26 (.nvmrc): vitest run (61 passed, 1 skipped), test:types (TS 5.6–5.9) and test:eslint all pass. Prettier is clean.

  • This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed deep comparisons of sets so each item must match a distinct item, regardless of order. Comparisons can also reconsider an earlier match when needed to find a valid overall match.
    • Fixed cases where a failed comparison could incorrectly affect later results.
    • Improved consistency when comparing nested values and repeated references, including structures with shared children. These changes help deep comparisons return accurate results across complex combinations of values.

compareDeep let several elements of one Set match the same element of
the other, and kept failed pair comparisons in its circular-reference
cache, so a later comparison of that pair returned true. Match each
element at most once and only treat pairs still being compared as equal.

Walkthrough

Deep comparisons now track object-pair evaluations and match Set elements one-to-one. Tests cover duplicate and reordered Sets, reassigned matches, failed comparisons, and shared children in recursive objects.

Changes: Deep Set comparison

Layer / File(s) Summary
Object-pair tracking
packages/store/src/compare.ts, packages/store/tests/compare.spec.ts
Deep comparisons track in-progress and confirmed-equal object pairs. They cache successful results only when provisional equality assumptions are resolved. Shallow comparisons evaluate objects directly. Tests cover failed comparisons and shared children in recursive objects.
One-to-one Set matching
packages/store/src/compare.ts, packages/store/tests/compare.spec.ts, .changeset/fix-compare-deep-sets.md
Deep Set comparison matches each element at most once, tries identical references first, and caches element-pair comparisons. Tests cover duplicate elements, reordered matches, and reassignment. A changeset declares a patch release for @tanstack/store.

Releasing every pair after it is compared made shared children compare
again on each path to them, which is exponential for a deep DAG. Cache
pairs proven equal, but only when the result did not rely on assuming an
in-progress (circular) pair equal.

🟡 Minor · Replace first-match Set removal with bipartite matching. Do not use… · compare.ts:139-144

packages/store/src/compare.ts:139-144
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Replace first-match Set removal with bipartite matching. Do not use exhaustive backtracking.

The Set branch removes the first deep match. A later element may need that candidate. With a custom equals that is not transitive, this returns false for Sets that have a valid one-to-one match. For example, v1 matches b1 and b2, and v2 matches only b1. The loop pairs v1 with b1, so v2 fails. The matching v1 → b2, v2 → b1 is valid.

Exhaustive backtracking is not a safe fix. For unequal Sets whose elements mostly match each other, backtracking explores a factorial number of assignments before it returns false. For example, 11 {} values plus { a: 1 }, compared with 12 {} values, explores 12! assignments.

Compute the candidate matches for each element once. Then run augmenting-path bipartite matching. This does not assume that equals is symmetric or transitive. It evaluates every pair once, so it can cost more than the current early-exit loop when a match exists.

Taking the first deep match for each Set element could leave a later
element without one, even when a one-to-one matching exists, if a custom
equals is not transitive. Use augmenting paths, comparing each pair at
most once and only when it is needed.

@coderabbitai Thanks, addressed the outside-diff comment on the Set branch in 83f5cd8. Set elements are now matched with augmenting paths: a later element can take an earlier element's match when that element can move to another. Pairs are compared lazily and at most once (memoized per pair), so there's no factorial backtracking, and a Set that matches in order costs the same as before. Added a test with a non-transitive equals (a1 equals b1 and b2, a2 equals only b1), which failed with the first-match loop.

@Gourav224 Thanks for the update. Augmenting-path matching addresses the first-match limitation by allowing earlier matches to move. The non-transitive equals regression test targets that failure case. Per-pair memoization also avoids repeated comparisons during reassignment.

I have not independently verified commit 83f5cd8.

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Make circular comparison caching dependency-aware.

A self-referential leaf shared by both properties of each wrapper prevents seen.equal from caching any completed pair. The comparison then repeats both child comparisons at every level.

The operation count grows as T(n) = 2T(n-1) + 1. At 20 wrapper levels, 42 allocated objects require about 2 million object-pair evaluations. At 25 levels, 52 allocated objects require about 67 million evaluations. This can materially stall the exported compareDeep.

Replace the global assumption counter with dependency-aware bookkeeping. Cache a pair only after every in-progress pair that it assumed has completed successfully. Discard dependent results when any comparison fails. Keep the existing finally cleanup and circular-pair assumption behavior.

Use a Map for direct Set matches.

others.indexOf(values[value]) performs a linear scan for every left element. Equal primitive or reference Sets therefore perform quadratic direct-match checks. The previous Set branch was also quadratic, so this is an optimization rather than a new asymptotic regression. Map preserves direct matching for ordinary values, NaN, and zero.

A single counter of circular assumptions stopped every enclosing pair from
being cached, so a shared self-referencing child was compared again on
every path. Record the stack depth each in-progress pair was assumed at,
and cache a pair when it assumed only itself or pairs below it. Also look
up direct Set matches with a Map instead of indexOf.

@coderabbitai Addressed both in e4861a1:

  • Dependency-aware caching: the global counter is replaced by the stack depth each in-progress pair was assumed at. A pair is cached as equal when it succeeds and every pair it assumed is itself or a pair below it, all of them complete. Assumptions about pairs further up propagate to those pairs, and a pair that fails caches nothing that depended on it. Added a 30-level test whose wrappers share one self-referencing leaf. It finishes instantly; the previous commit was still running after 30s.
  • Direct Set matches now use a Map instead of indexOf.

@Gourav224 Thanks for addressing both concerns in e4861a1. The reported dependency-aware caching targets repeated comparisons of shared cyclic objects. The Map removes the repeated indexOf lookup for direct Set matches.

I have not independently verified the commit or the reported test timing.
