Part of #586. Merge after #587 (this branch's EXTRACT(WEEK) test depends on the real WEEK() mode-0 semantics from #587; rebased without it, that one assertion reads 19 instead of 18).

Adds REPEAT, RIGHT, LPAD/RPAD, SPACE, ASCII/ORD, STRCMP, FIND_IN_SET (incl. user-variable usage), ELT, MAKE_SET, EXPORT_SET, SOUNDEX, and string INSERT(). Fixes three live wrong-result bugs: LCASE/UCASE returned the literal strings lower(...)/upper(...) (now mapped to native LOWER/UPPER, dead UDFs removed), FORMAT() ignored thousands separators, and fixes POSITION(x IN y), EXTRACT(part FROM …), extended TRIM(… FROM …), plus a LOCATE() 3-arg off-by-one found along the way. Also maps TRUNCATE() onto SQLite TRUNC().

Verification: full mysql-on-sqlite package suite green (1440 baseline + 27 new tests incl. translation-output assertions, 0 failures).

Findings

Minor exportset() does not clamp numberofbits to 64.
Minor ord() returns a Unicode code point. MySQL returns a byte-composed value.
Minor findinset() compares case-sensitively. MySQL compares case-insensitively.
Minor repeat(), space(), lpad(), and rpad() have no output size limit.
Minor locate() throws or returns wrong results for start positions beyond the string and for an empty nee…
Major Fix TRUNCATE() boundary errors and avoid the optional POW() dependency.
Major TRUNCATE fails on older SQLite builds and returns 120.0 instead of 120.
Major RIGHT() translation produces a SQLite syntax error.

This PR adds many MySQL string functions on SQLite, but RIGHT() fails with a syntax error and TRUNCATE() breaks on some SQLite builds or returns wrong values. Several other functions differ from MySQL in edge cases. The failing CI checks and the broken RIGHT() and TRUNCATE() should be fixed before merging.

PHP soundex() does not match MySQL SOUNDEX() for longer words.

PHP always truncates the code to 4 characters. MySQL returns an arbitrarily long string. For example, MySQL returns Q36324 for SOUNDEX('Quadratically'). This code returns Q362. On PHP < 8.0, soundex('') returns false instead of ''.

Implement the MySQL algorithm without the 4-character truncation, or document the difference.

5344-5359: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Poor tradeoff

Multi-character remstr in TRIM() produces wrong results.

SQLite TRIM(X, Y), LTRIM, and RTRIM remove any character that appears in Y. MySQL removes whole repeated occurrences of the remstr string. For example, TRIM(BOTH 'xy' FROM 'xyxabcxy') returns xabc in MySQL. The translated SQLite call returns abc.

Single-character remstr values work. Longer values return wrong results without an error. The docblock says the forms are "covered by the same mapping", which is not true for these inputs.

Either translate multi-character remstr to a UDF that removes whole-string repeats, or document and reject non-single-character literals.

Thanks — both CI failures and all six correctness findings are addressed in e59abac.

CI failures

  1. RIGHT() syntax error — fixed. RIGHT does not parse as a functionCall; it is a keyword token handled by translate_runtime_function_call, which is why the earlier mapping missed it. It now maps to a right_str() UDF with a non-reserved name. Added the translation assertion you suggested.
  2. TRUNCATE on older SQLite — fixed. The POW()-based expression is gone (math functions are absent from older supported builds), replaced by a truncate() UDF that truncates toward zero and returns an integer when no fractional part remains, so TRUNCATE(123.456, -1) is 120.

Correctness
3. locate() start beyond the string / empty needle — fixed. An offset past the haystack returns 0 instead of throwing, and an empty needle returns the start position.
4. Unbounded repeat()/space()/lpad()/rpad() — fixed. A shared 64 MiB limit (MySQL's default max_allowed_packet) returns NULL before allocating; the pad functions check the final result length, including the original string.
5. ord() — fixed. It now composes the value from the bytes of the leftmost character, so ORD('é') is 50089, not 233.
6. find_in_set() — fixed. Comparison is case-insensitive like the default collation, and an empty list returns 0 rather than 1.
7. export_set() — fixed. number_of_bits is clipped at 64.

One related platform limit worth recording, found while testing the size guard: the PDO UDF bridge truncates integer arguments to 32 bits, not just return values. REPEAT('a', 4000000000) arrives as a negative count and yields '' (as MySQL does for any negative count), so the guard is exercised with 67108865 instead, and the test documents the truncation.

Full package suite is green (1472 tests) and PHPCS passes.

Add the string functions from the coverage audit (WordPress#586): REPEAT, RIGHT, LPAD,
RPAD, SPACE, ASCII, ORD, STRCMP, FIND_IN_SET, ELT, MAKE_SET, EXPORT_SET,
SOUNDEX, FORMAT and the string form of INSERT(). SOUNDEX and FIND_IN_SET appear
in plugins in this stack, including a fuzzy-search path and a BuddyBoss folder
query.

Two of these fix silent wrong answers rather than missing functions:
- LCASE()/UCASE() returned the literal strings "lower(...)" and "upper(...)",
because the UDFs returned a SQL fragment instead of a value. They now map to
SQLite's LOWER()/UPPER() and the broken UDFs are removed.
- FORMAT() fell through to SQLite's printf-style format() and never added
  thousands separators.

Translator gaps fixed along the way: TRUNCATE(), POSITION(x IN y) which was
mistranslated into a table reference, EXTRACT(part FROM ...), the extended
TRIM(BOTH|LEADING|TRAILING ... FROM ...) form, and LOCATE()'s three-argument
offset, which was off by one.

Review follow-ups addressed: RIGHT() maps to a right_str() UDF because RIGHT is
a join keyword in newer SQLite versions and cannot be called as a function
there; TRUNCATE() no longer depends on POW(), which older supported SQLite
builds lack, and returns an integer when no fraction remains; LOCATE() returns 0
for a start position past the end instead of throwing; string results are
capped at MySQL's default max_allowed_packet so REPEAT/SPACE/LPAD/RPAD cannot
exhaust the PHP memory limit; ORD() composes its value from bytes rather than a
code point; FIND_IN_SET() compares case-insensitively; EXPORT_SET() clips its
bit count at 64.

Known limits, documented in the code: STRCMP and FIND_IN_SET compare bytes, so
non-ASCII case folding differs from a UTF-8 collation; FORMAT ignores its locale
argument; and the PDO UDF bridge truncates integer arguments to 32 bits, so
REPEAT('a', 4000000000) arrives as a negative count and returns an empty string,
as MySQL does for any negative count.
