Review of the birthday email job API. Two correctness issues are worth fixing before merge (lease race in the record functions, and crashed jobs never using up attempts). The rest are convention and cleanup items. Inline comments below.
Minor: branch name / commit message don't follow the README's feature/... + Conventional Commits convention. Not blocking.

Race (bug): the lease is checked with findUnique above, then this update writes by id only. If the lease expires and another worker claims the job between the check and the write, this stale worker still overwrites the new owner's state. Suggest a conditional write:
const { count } = await prisma.birthdayEmailLog.updateMany({
where: { id, lockToken, status: "PROCESSING" },
data: { ... },
});
if (count === 0) throw new ApiError("Invalid or expired lock token", 409);Same issue at line 321 in recordBirthdayJobFailed.

Endless retries (bug): when an expired PROCESSING job is reclaimed here, attemptCount is not incremented. A job that crashes the worker every time (never reaching /sent or /failed) is reclaimed forever and never goes DEAD. Suggest counting the lost attempt on reclaim and moving the job to DEAD once it hits MAX_ATTEMPTS.

new Date(sentAt) isn't validated. An invalid string becomes Invalid Date, Prisma throws, and the client gets a 500 instead of a 400.

Nit: the find → 404 → 409 lease check here is duplicated in recordBirthdayJobFailed (283-296). Could be one helper, e.g. assertLeaseOwned(id, lockToken). lockToken is also validated in both the controller and the service; one place is enough.

Nit: errorClassification: string is compared against bare strings ("PERMANENT", "CONFIG", "QUOTA") and defaulted to "TRANSIENT" in the controller. A union type (type ErrorClassification = "TRANSIENT" | "PERMANENT" | "CONFIG" | "QUOTA") plus validation would catch typos from the caller.

Convention: other controllers build the response as { success: true, <entity> } (e.g. emailTemplate.controller.ts), with the service returning plain data. Here (and line 89) the service's return value, success flag included, is passed straight through.

Convention: the other route files document every endpoint with apidoc blocks (@api, @apiName, @apiGroup, etc.; see src/routes/email.ts), so they show up in /docs. These routes only have one-line comments.
Also, the file is internalBirthday.ts but it's mounted at /birthday-emails. Siblings name the file after the mount path.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
Convention: env vars are read through src/config/index.ts elsewhere, not process.env directly. The BIRTHDAY_SERVICE_SECRET fallback isn't in .env.example either; suggest dropping it and using only INTERNAL_SERVICE_SECRET.
Question: does the caller need all three header forms (x-internal-secret, x-service-secret, Bearer)? If it only sends one, accepting just that one keeps the surface smaller.
| const expectedBuffer = Buffer.from(configuredSecret, "utf-8"); | ||

Minor: the length check before timingSafeEqual leaks the secret's length through timing. Hashing both sides (e.g. SHA-256) first gives equal-length buffers and removes the leak.

Nit: birthdayCtrl is imported but never used.
- Write job results with a lease-checked updateMany so a worker whose
lease expired can't overwrite a job another worker has claimed
- Count the lost attempt when reclaiming an expired PROCESSING job and
move it to DEAD at max attempts, so crashing jobs don't retry forever
- Validate sentAt and errorClassification in the controller (400 not 500)
- Controller builds the { success: true, ... } response; service returns data
- Read INTERNAL_SERVICE_SECRET via config, drop BIRTHDAY_SERVICE_SECRET
fallback, hash before timingSafeEqual to hide secret length
- Rename route file to birthdayEmails.ts and add apidoc blocks
- Dedupe lease checks, defaults and retry delays; type errorClassification
- Update and extend tests
- Accept the UNCERTAIN error classification sent by the COC-Members birthday worker (provider timeout after dispatch); retry it like TRANSIENT. The previous commit rejected it with a 400. - Validate providerMessageId as string, null or missing (400 otherwise) - Accept only the x-internal-secret header; the worker already sends it - Match sibling controllers: export const handlers, single service import
Simplification passFive spots are more complex than they need to be. Each has a standard simpler way, and none changes the API's responses, so the COC-Members worker is unaffected. Applying these on this branch.
Not changing: claiming jobs makes one database call per job (up to 50 per batch). A single |
- initialize: rely on the unique (memberId, birthdayYear) index with createMany skipDuplicates instead of pre-loading existing jobs; move the email check into the member query - /sent: write first with the lease-guarded updateMany and only read on a miss (404 / already sent / 409). Saves a query per send and makes overlapping /sent calls return alreadySent instead of 409 - stats: replace the status switch with a lookup map - drop controller checks the service already does - derive ClaimedJob from the Prisma model
