Recognize aliases of the tools import.
If a planner script uses from sentient_tools import tools as t and calls t.web_fetch(...), reads_pages returns False. The new watch keeps changed and reports page noise without the relevance check. Resolve the imported binding before matching page-tool calls.

Thanks @n-o-t-mugen, the prompt change works well. In a real run with qwen3:8b, "watch this page and tell me about new events" planned as noteworthy on its own. It stayed silent through the first check and two unchanged ones, then sent exactly one notification when a new event appeared, even though the view counter changed too.
The guard in planner_default (sentient/tasks/scripts.py ~109-116) is too broad, though. In the same run:
- "Tell me whenever anything at all on this page changes": the planner proposed
changedtwice, and the guard savednoteworthyboth times. That goes against the user's own words, and the fast model may now hide a change they explicitly asked to hear about. - "Tell me when the price changes": the planner proposed
changedtwice, as your new prompt says to for one exact value, and the guard savednoteworthy. Most price watches read the price withweb_fetch, so the guard makeschangedimpossible for them. CodeRabbit flagged this too.
Could you either drop the guard and rely on the prompt default, or narrow it so it applies only when the script returns the whole fetched page, and never when the user asks for any change? A prompt line like "If the user wants to hear about any change at all, use changed" would help too.
Please also add a test where a web_fetch script returns one extracted value and stays changed, and relabel the internet_search case, which is a search, not an exact value. Hermes imports and later edits are fine as they are.

Thanks for testing it for real! I dropped the guard: the planner's condition is now stored as proposed, so "anything at all changes" and price watches keep |

Thanks @n-o-t-mugen. Dropping the guard fixed the "any change" and price cases: in a real run with qwen3:8b, both always planned changed. The page watch didn't come out as noteworthy, though. On today's main, "Every 10 minutes watch this page and tell me about new events" was planned as changed in 4 out of 4 runs. As changed, a change to the view counter alone sent a notification, a raw dump of the page. The same task switched to noteworthy stayed quiet on the counter and sent one clear notification for the new event ("A new event titled 'Seed library swap' was added"), so the check itself works well.
Since the prompt line alone isn't enough for small models, could you bring back a narrow default? Use noteworthy only when all three of these hold:
- the planner proposes
changed; - the script returns the whole result of
tools.web_fetch(the page or itscontent); - the request doesn't ask about any change ("anything", "any change").
One extracted value, a search, or "tell me whenever anything changes" should keep changed. Please add tests for both sides.
Please also rebase on main. docs/API.md (the script-job paragraph) and tests/tasks/test_scripts_triggers_retry.py conflict, so CI hasn't run the engine tests yet. Keep main's paragraph and add your two lines, and keep both tests.

Use the latest change request when checking any-change intent.
If a user changes an existing noteworthy page watch to “tell me about any change,” the planner can propose changed. _default_condition checks only original_prompt, so an original request for important updates causes planner_default to restore noteworthy. The saved task can miss changes requested in the latest chat message. Check the latest applicable user instruction as well as the original request.

Thanks @n-o-t-mugen, this is close. I ran it for real with qwen3:8b on a fresh home. The page watch now works end to end: "Every 10 minutes watch and tell me about new events" was proposed as changed and stored as noteworthy in 2 of 2 runs. Running it through an unchanged check, a view counter change and a new event sent exactly one notification: "A new event 'Seed library swap' was added". "Tell me whenever anything at all on changes" kept changed.
One problem is the price request. "Every 10 minutes check the price on and tell me when the price changes" was proposed as changed every time, but in one run qwen's script returned value['content'] (the whole page), so it was stored as noteworthy. The any-change check only knows "anything" and "any change", so these become noteworthy too:
- "tell me about every change to "
- "tell me when changes"
- "let me know if the page changes at all"
Someone who says "change" wants to hear about changes, so a small AI check shouldn't decide that for them.
Could you keep changed whenever the request talks about a change at all (change, changes, changed, changing), plus "anything" and "every"? "Tell me about new events" has none of those, so it still becomes noteworthy. Please add those phrasings to the parametrized test on the changed side.
Optional: CodeRabbit's .strip() note is worth taking, since result(page.get("content", "").strip()) is still the whole page.
|
Thanks for running it again! Done: a request that talks about a change (change, changes, changed, changing), or says "anything" or "everything", now keeps changed, so the price request and all three phrasings you listed stay changed. They're in the parametrized test now, including the price script returning value['content']. One note: I didn't match a bare "every", because "Every 10 minutes watch this page and tell me about new events" would then stay changed; "every change" is already caught by "change". I also took the .strip() note: page.get("content", "").strip() counts as the whole page. Full suite passes and ruff is clean. |

Thanks @n-o-t-mugen, the change-word rule works. I ran it with qwen3:8b:
- "tell me when the price changes" stayed
changed, even when qwen's script returned.get('content', '').strip(). - "anything at all … changes" and "let me know if the page changes at all" stayed
changedin 2 of 2 runs. - "tell me about new events" became
noteworthy.
Leaving out a bare "every" makes sense.
One problem showed up when I ran the events watch through its checks. After the first check and an unchanged check, a change to only the view counter sent "A new event was added…", and four more counter-only checks gave 3 more false alerts. The cause is in scripts._lines: when the script returns the whole web_fetch dict, it is JSON-dumped, so the page text is one line and the judge sees the whole page as removed and re-added. With the same judge prompt and qwen3:8b, that shape gave "new event" 5 of 5 times. With string values split into lines, the diff is only Page views: 1155 → 1163: qwen said it wasn't noteworthy 5 of 5 times, and a real new event was still caught 3 of 3. Since this PR sends these watches to the judge, could you split strings inside dicts and lists in _lines? For example:
def _lines(value: Any) -> list[str]:
if isinstance(value, dict):
return [f"{k}: {line}" for k in sorted(value, key=str) for line in _lines(value[k])]
if isinstance(value, list):
return [line for item in value for line in _lines(item)]
text = value if isinstance(value, str) else json.dumps(value, ensure_ascii=False, default=str)
return [line.rstrip() for line in text.splitlines() if line.strip()]Please add a test that two web_fetch results differing only in a counter give a one-line diff.
Also, as CodeRabbit noted, "tell me about important changes" keeps changed. Please don't count "change" as asking for any change when a qualifier (important, big, major, significant, meaningful) comes right before it, and add those to the test.
…ant changes reach it
|
Thanks for tracing the false alerts to _lines! Done: _lines now splits text inside dicts and lists into key: line, so a counter-only change to a whole web_fetch result is a one-line diff (- content: Page views: 1155 / + content: Page views: 1163), with a test for exactly that. The existing diff_text test now expects - price: 100 instead of the JSON-dump format. A change word right after important, big, major, significant or meaningful no longer counts as asking for any change, so "tell me about important changes" becomes noteworthy; those five are in the parametrized test. Full suite passes and ruff is clean. |

Recognize modifiers separated from “changes.”
If a user asks for “important page changes,” _ANY_CHANGE matches “changes” without its modifier. planner_default then retains changed for a whole-page watch. Routine page changes can trigger notifications instead of reaching the relevance check. Classify the full request phrase before treating “changes” as an unqualified request.

Thanks @n-o-t-mugen, this is great work, and thank you for sticking with it through several rounds! I ran it again with qwen3:8b on a fresh home:
Merged. One small follow-up is in #370, a good first issue if you'd like it: when a watch is changed in chat to "any change", the default should also read the chat messages. |
The planner still picked the plain "changed" condition for page and news watches, so any change notified the user, including view counters and timestamps.
Now a watch on a page, a feed or the news defaults to "important changes" (noteworthy):
The prompt: directive 10 names noteworthy as the default for pages, feeds and news, and keeps changed for one exact value such as a price or a status.
A guard after the model: if the planner still proposes changed for a script that calls web_fetch, news_search, news_top_headlines or a browser read, the task is saved as noteworthy. So the default holds even when a small model picks the wrong option.
Unchanged: alert and every_run, changed on other tools (an exact price), a watch that was already changed, user edits, and imported Hermes monitor jobs.
Closes #298
