Summary

The site moves from GitHub Pages to Cloudflare Workers. It is already live there: this PR makes CI deploy it. Until it merges, a website change on main goes to GitHub Pages, which no longer serves the domain.

  • Deploy: docs.yml uploads a plain artifact, then runs wrangler deploy from the website environment. Only main may deploy from it, and it holds CLOUDFLARE_API_TOKEN.
  • Worker: static assets only (website/wrangler.jsonc), on a zone route getopenscreen.com/*.
  • Improvements over Pages:
    • each locale gets its own 404 page (/fr/missing/ now gets the French one);
    • content-hashed assets/ are cached as immutable (static/_headers).
  • www: a separate Worker (website/www-redirect/, deployed by hand) sends www to the apex, as Pages did.

Why routes rather than custom domains: Cloudflare refuses a custom domain over existing DNS records (error 100117). The cutover was proxying the four apex A records and the www CNAME. No record was deleted and the site never went down. Turning the proxy off goes back to GitHub Pages.

After merge: disable GitHub Pages and delete the github-pages environment.

Release impact

  • No release note needed

Desktop impact

  • Not platform-specific

Testing

  • wrangler dev on a full eight-locale build:
    • /download → 307 to /download/;
    • /fr/nope/ → French 404;
    • assets/* and /<locale>/assets/* → immutable;
    • _headers is not served.
  • Live on getopenscreen.com since the cutover (deployed with wrangler from this branch's build):
    • apex 200;
    • http:// → 301 to https://;
    • www → 301 to the apex;
    • /fr/download/ and /discord/ → 200.
  • Not yet exercised: the CI deploy job itself. Its first run is on merge.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The website is now served through Cloudflare, with permanent redirects from www.getopenscreen.com to getopenscreen.com.
    • Localized missing pages now display the appropriate language-specific 404 page.
    • Website assets are configured for long-term browser caching.
  • Documentation
    • Updated website deployment and translation guidance to reflect the current hosting behavior, root-domain URLs, and localized error pages.

…Pages

docs.yml now uploads a plain artifact and deploys it with wrangler from a `website` environment that only main may deploy from. The Worker serves static assets only: each locale gets its own 404 page, and content-hashed assets are cached as immutable. A separate Worker (website/www-redirect, deployed by hand) sends www to the apex, as GitHub Pages did.

Both Workers sit on zone routes rather than custom domains, which Cloudflare refuses over existing DNS records. The switch was proxying the apex A records and the www CNAME: no record deleted, no downtime, and turning the proxy off goes back to GitHub Pages.

📝 Walkthrough

The website deployment moves from GitHub Pages to Cloudflare Workers. The build workflow uploads the site as an artifact and deploys it with Wrangler. A separate Worker redirects requests from the www hostname to the apex domain.

Changes: Cloudflare website hosting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure Cloudflare site hosting
website/wrangler.jsonc, website/static/_headers, website/docusaurus.config.ts, website/.gitignore, website/i18n/TRANSLATING.md, website/README.md
Adds static asset hosting configuration and one-year cache headers. The Docusaurus build removes localized _headers files. Hosting comments, translation guidance, the README, and the Wrangler ignore rule are updated.
Build and deploy the site
.github/workflows/build.yml, .github/workflows/docs.yml, technical-documentation/engineering/ci-workflows.md
The build workflow uploads website/build as an artifact. The deployment job downloads the artifact and deploys it to Cloudflare through Wrangler on pushes or manual dispatches on main. The workflow documentation reflects the destination and token source.
Add the www redirect Worker
website/www-redirect/*, website/README.md
Adds a Worker that redirects requests to the same URL on getopenscreen.com with status 301. Its configuration routes the www hostname to the Worker. The README documents its manual deployment.

- Line 8: In the redirect handler, set the URL protocol to HTTPS after updating
its hostname and before calling Response.redirect, so HTTP requests redirect to
the apex domain over HTTPS.
