Summary

Voiceovers recorded across trimmed timeline sections now stay aligned with the edited video while preserving the take as a plain audio track.

Changes

  • Record the take against the raw timeline while the virtual and native previews show the unedited picture at 1x.
  • Place the take with its full recording duration as a plain audio track; later cuts and trim mapping mute the removed sections without adding a schema-specific recording field.
  • Wait for preview playback to succeed before starting MediaRecorder; release the microphone and abort cleanly when playback cannot start.
  • Add NewEditorShell and AddAudioLayerDialog regressions covering recording across a cut and failed preview startup.

Tests

  • Focused Vitest checks: 181 passed.
  • Full Vitest suite: 4,923 passed, 8 skipped; 4 failures are the pre-existing .github/scripts/stable-release-notes.test.mjs baseline failures reproduced on clean main.
  • App and test TypeScript checks, changed-file Biome, npm run build-vite, and git diff --check pass.
  • Repository-wide lint reports the existing baseline diagnostics (154 errors, 26 warnings); the changed files pass Biome.

Known limitations

  • The upstream CI and Diagnostic artifact workflows are action_required for this fork PR and create no jobs until a repository maintainer approves them. Discord synchronization and CodeRabbit review pass.
  • A desktop Electron preview/export smoke test was not available in this environment.

📝 Walkthrough

Voiceover recording now captures a timeline interval and uses it to place the recorded audio. While recording, preview and native playback use the unedited timeline. Tests cover playback mode, native scene synchronization, and voiceover splitting around trims.

Changes: Voiceover recording across timeline trims

Layer / File(s) Summary
Capture the voiceover recording interval
src/components/ai-edition/NewEditorShell.tsx, src/components/ai-edition/Preview.tsx
The recording flow recaptures the playhead, recalculates the remaining duration, resets playback speed, and starts playback when paused. Voiceover placement uses the captured start position. Preview receives the unedited-timeline flag while recording.
Use unedited playback during recording
src/components/ai-edition/PreviewCanvas.tsx, src/components/ai-edition/VirtualPreview.tsx, src/components/ai-edition/VirtualPreview.playback.test.tsx
When enabled, playback ignores trim ranges and speed regions. Playback uses rate 1. Tests verify source time and playback rate.
Synchronize native playback and scene output
src/components/ai-edition/NativeCompositorOverlay.tsx, src/native/sceneDescription.test.ts, src/components/ai-edition/NewEditorShell.voiceover.test.tsx
Native playback derives an unedited document during recording and restores the edited document afterward. Tests verify active-clip changes, voiceover placement, and voiceover entries split around trimmed sections.

Explanation

Issue [#1195] requires voiceover playback and export to skip trimmed ranges, contain no audio in removed ranges, and stay aligned afterward. The recording flow now records on the unedited 1x timeline and adds a plain voiceover track at the captured start position. Existing trim processing then splits that track around the trim range. The new tests verify the plain track and the split scene output.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed production code supports unedited playback only during voiceover recording and places the resulting audio track for normal trim processing. The added tests cover recording placement, playback mode, and later trim behavior. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description clearly explains the change, references issue #1195, and provides detailed testing results and known limitations. It does not use the template headings for Type of change, Release impact, or Desktop impact, and it omits a Screenshots / video section, but the core information is complete.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The implementation conflicts with the requested approach in the objectives. It adds recording-map and unedited-playback behavior across multiple components instead of recording an ordinary uncut 1x audio track and applying later edits normally.

Resolution

Rework the implementation to record on an uncut 1x timeline, insert the take at its starting position with addAudioTrack, and let subsequent trims and speed regions apply through the existing audio-track path. Remove recordingPlaybackMap and related playback-mode handling, or obtain explicit approval to revise the stated objectives.

Apply the inverse speed mapping when finding a cue word.

When a recorded voiceover has a speed-adjusted piece, voiceoverPlacements now gives that piece different raw and source spans. findCueWordId still adds the raw offset directly to sourceStartSec. For a raw span of 2–6 and source span of 2–4, raw second 4 belongs to source second 3, but this calculation selects source second 4. Use the placement’s raw and source endpoints to convert rawSec before matching words; retain the linear fallback for placements without an explicit raw end.

Thanks for digging into this: the drift is real, and your diagnosis of why it happens is right. We'd like to fix it with a different model, though, and not through a snapshot stored on the track.

What we want

  1. Record against the uncut ruler. While a voiceover is being recorded, playback ignores cuts and speed regions. It plays the raw timeline continuously at 1x, so what the user says lines up with the picture exactly as it was recorded.
  2. Place the take as an ordinary audio pill. When recording stops, the take goes on the audio lane at the playhead where it started, like any imported track, with no extra state.
  3. From then on it follows the same rules as every other pill. Cuts and speed regions apply to it exactly as they apply to the other tracks. If the user changes a cut later, the voiceover reacts like everything else, and nothing depends on what the timeline looked like at recording time.

Why not recordingPlaybackMap

  • It is state the user cannot see. The track keeps the cuts and speeds of the moment it was recorded, so editing the cuts afterwards gives a result nothing in the UI explains. We avoid controls and state that change the output invisibly.
  • It adds a permanent field to the project format for one recording path, and every reader of the document (playback, export, transcription, insertion) has to know about it.
  • The MCP tools (getCurrentDocument, addAudio, setAudio) cannot read or write it, so an agent editing the project would see one thing while the export does another. Whatever the fix, the resulting track has to be fully visible and editable through those tools, like any other audio track.

Scope

  • The change should mostly be in the voiceover recording flow (NewEditorShell.tsx): play through cuts and speed while recording, then add the track with the existing addAudioTrack.
  • The programme-time / take-programme / aggregated-transcript / sceneDescription changes and the schema field should not be needed.
  • Please add a test showing that a take recorded across a cut is placed as a plain track, and that a cut made afterwards mutes it like any other track.

Happy to review a reworked version. If you'd rather not, say so and we'll take it from here, crediting you.

Thanks for reworking this along the lines we discussed. The track is now plain, with no schema field, which is exactly the model we wanted. Three things before we can merge:

  1. On desktop the visible picture comes from the native compositor (NativeCompositorOverlay), not from the <video> elements, which are hidden and only drive the clock. That component still plays the trimmed scene and pushes the speed region's rate, so while recording the user probably still sees the cut version. playUneditedTimeline needs to reach it too (uncut scene, rate 1). We'll confirm on Windows.
  2. Please place the take with spanSec: durationSec, like an imported track. A span measured from the playhead truncates the take whenever playback starts late or stalls, since createAudioTrack cuts the track to spanSec.
  3. The branch has a merge commit and intermediate commits that add then remove the schema field. This repo merges by rebase only: please rebase on main and squash into one commit.

A test at the NewEditorShell level (a take recorded across a cut is added as a plain track) would close the last item from the earlier review. Note that this does not fix #1283, which is a separate export issue.

Fixed in the final single commit 66fcd151a308e48b79cb0d550f14a3c676d43ab9: voiceover recording now waits for preview playback to succeed before starting MediaRecorder, and releases the microphone cleanly if playback fails. Native preview recording mode also follows the raw, unedited timeline at 1x. Focused regression tests pass (181/181); the PR remains mergeable.
