Summary

Overlapping annotations can hide one another in the timeline. Add independent annotation tracks that keep every object selectable, movable, resizable and deletable, including identical overlaps and clip-boundary fragments.

Tracks come from time overlaps: each annotation takes the highest free row below every higher annotation it overlaps. Nonoverlapping annotations reuse rows regardless of saved zIndex, so ten sequential annotations stay on one row. Vertical dragging places an annotation above or below the annotations it overlaps at the drop time, including shared-layer projects; span and compositing order save together as one undo step.

Stacking is limited to annotations. Speed, trim, zoom, camera and effect regions retain their single lanes and repulsion rules. Track geometry is independent of zoom, and the timeline reports its exact live row count to the shell. Pill operations opt into annotation behavior explicitly; both editor and MCP additions use the highest saved layer plus one. Includes memoized layout, translated pill drag hints, architecture documentation and regression coverage.

Overlapping annotations on separate tracks

Testing

Verified locally on macOS. Tests, typechecks, build and browser checks used Node 22.22.1:

  • npm run test -- --maxWorkers=2 — 355 files passed; 4,952 tests passed, 2 skipped
  • App typecheck and renderer/Electron bundle build: npm run build-vite
  • Test typecheck: npx tsc -p tsconfig.test.json --noEmit
  • npm run lint:fix and npm run lint (existing warnings, no errors)
  • npm run i18n:check and npm run docs:check
  • Browser preview plus Playwright: tests/e2e/v4-shell.spec.ts and tests/e2e/editor-smoke.spec.ts — 10 passed

Regression coverage includes sequential row reuse, overlap-order chains, equal-layer downward drops, horizontal drop positions, independent annotation identity, explicit annotation options, MCP layer allocation, live panel sizing, persistence and one-step undo/redo. Browser coverage includes pointer dragging with shared layers, undo/redo and row stability while zooming.

Native capture, GPU preview/export and packaged installers were not exercised. The branch is rebased onto main with no merge commits.

📝 Walkthrough

Annotations can overlap as separate pills. The timeline packs them into rows, supports horizontal and vertical dragging, persists span and layer changes together, and sizes the shell from the rendered annotation rows. Localized drag guidance and regression coverage were added.

Changes: Annotation tracks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Annotation identity and persistence
src/lib/ai-edition/timeline/timelineMap.ts, src/lib/ai-edition/store/useTimeline.ts, electron/ai-edition/agent-tools.ts, src/lib/ai-edition/document/timeline.ts, tests
Annotation coalescing, selection, deletion, replacement, z-index assignment, and persistence now support independent overlapping annotations.
Track packing and timeline interaction
src/lib/ai-edition/timeline/regionTracks.ts, src/components/ai-edition/v4/V4Timeline.tsx, src/components/ai-edition/NewEditorShell.tsx
Annotation spans are packed into rows. Vertical dragging computes layer changes. V4Timeline reports row counts, and NewEditorShell includes annotation rows in lane sizing.
Validation, localization, and documentation
src/lib/ai-edition/timeline/*.test.ts, src/components/ai-edition/**/*.test.tsx, tests/e2e/v4-shell.spec.ts, src/i18n/locales/*/timeline.json, technical-documentation/architecture/timeline-model.md
Tests cover overlap, row reuse, drag ordering, persistence, undo/redo, lane sizing, and localized drag guidance. The timeline model documents the annotation rules.

Overlapping annotations now stack into separate rows, and the timeline panel grows to fit them. When many annotations overlap, the panel reaches its maximum height. Dragging the resize handle in that state can then save a much smaller default panel height, which remains after the annotations are removed. Users can resize the panel again to recover, so this is a small, bounded follow-up rather than a blocker.

Thanks @aiden-guan, this is careful work: the one-undo-step layer change, the identical-overlap handling and the clip-boundary edge case are all well thought out, and the export order matches what the timeline shows.

One thing needs to change before we can merge. A track is currently one layer, and every annotation already has its own layer: addAnnotation uses max + 1, and existing projects were saved with length + 1. So every annotation gets its own track, overlapping or not. Ten back-to-back annotations make ten tracks, and an existing project opens with its panel grown to the height limit. We'd like tracks to come from overlaps: an annotation sits on the highest free track below every higher-layer annotation it overlaps, and zIndex only orders overlapping ones. Vertical drag then means "above / below the annotations I overlap at the drop position" rather than "onto layer N".

Smaller points:

  • Please keep the stacking to the annotation lane. Speed, trim, zoom, camera and effect regions repel each other and never overlap, and with the compact-handle padding their lanes now gain or lose a row as the timeline is zoomed (regionTracks.ts:32, laneStyle).
  • NewEditorShell computes the row count without pxPerSec or stackOrder, so its height can disagree with what V4Timeline draws.
  • electron/ai-edition/agent-tools.ts:3169 (the MCP addAnnotation) still uses annotations.length + 1. Please switch it to the same max + 1, or it can create duplicate layers.
  • When two tracks share a layer, dragging down onto the lower one lands the annotation above it (useTimeline.ts:995, V4Timeline.tsx:1110).
  • replacePillSpan and coalesceRegionsForRuler detect annotations by the presence of zIndex. An explicit option would be safer if another region kind ever gets one.
  • The dragHint title also shows on the empty lane; putting it on the pills would be enough.
  • Minor perf: stackOrder does a findIndex per id (a Map would do), and packRegionRows runs twice per lane per render, including on every pointer move during a drag.

Also, the branch has two merge commits from main. We merge by rebase only, so please rebase onto main instead.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Unbounded annotation expansion makes the resize handle shrink the saved base height.

extraAnnotationHeightPx grows by 27 px for each row and has no limit. Before this change, the audio and effects expansions were small, so timelineBaseHeightPx + extraLaneHeightPx stayed below MAX_TIMELINE_HEIGHT_PX. Now, 7 or more overlapping annotations pin the rendered height at the maximum.

startTimelineResize (Lines 1500-1525) calculates the new base as max(MIN, renderedTarget - extraLaneHeightPx). renderedTarget is already clamped to MAX_TIMELINE_HEIGHT_PX, so the subtraction removes the full expansion from it. Example: base 392, extra 243. A small upward move gives max(160, 560 - 243) = 317, and 317 is written to localStorage. With 15 or more rows, any move writes 160. After the user removes the annotations, the timeline stays at the reduced saved height.

Change the base by the pointer delta from the height that is rendered at drag start. Then the clamp cannot discard the user's saved base.

🐛 Proposed fix for `startTimelineResize`
const startTimelineResize = useCallback(
	(e: React.PointerEvent) => {
		e.preventDefault();
		const startY = e.clientY;
		const startBase = timelineBaseHeightPx;
		const startRendered = timelineHeightPx;
		let latestBase = startBase;
		const move = (ev: PointerEvent) => {
			const renderedTarget = Math.min(
				MAX_TIMELINE_HEIGHT_PX,
				Math.max(MIN_TIMELINE_HEIGHT_PX, startRendered - (ev.clientY - startY)),
			);
			// Move the base by the visible change only, so a pinned panel keeps the saved base.
			latestBase = Math.min(
				MAX_TIMELINE_HEIGHT_PX,
				Math.max(MIN_TIMELINE_HEIGHT_PX, startBase + (renderedTarget - startRendered)),
			);
			setTimelineBaseHeightPx(latestBase);
		};
		// ...unchanged up handler
	},
	[timelineBaseHeightPx, timelineHeightPx],
);
