Summary

The app counts its active installs with one anonymous ping a day, and the site says so.

  • electron/usage-ping.ts sends at most one app_active event a day to PostHog EU: version, OS, architecture and install channel.
    • Each ping also says whether it is the first of the week and the first of the month. Weekly and monthly actives are plain counts of those flags, as Brave counts them, so no identifier is needed.
    • No install ID, no cookie. The distinct_id is random on each event, with no person profile. GeoIP is off on the event, and the project discards IP addresses.
    • It is sent from the main process with a plain fetch: no SDK and no new dependency. It goes out at launch, then every 6 hours, so an app left in the tray still counts each day.
  • Off switch: a Send Anonymous Usage Count checkbox in the tray menu, translated into the 15 languages. DO_NOT_TRACK=1 is respected too.
    • The ping never runs in a dev build or in CI. The checkbox is hidden where the ping cannot run.
  • The promise: the site's "no analytics" sentence becomes "no account, no server of its own; its only report is an anonymous daily count of active installs, which you can turn off". This covers five pages and the FAQ, in all eight languages. The FAQ lists exactly what the count holds.

Testing

  • electron/usage-ping.test.ts covers:
    • ISO weeks at year boundaries;
    • when the ping stays silent: turned off, dev build, DO_NOT_TRACK, CI, already sent today;
    • the week and month flags;
    • a body with no stable id;
    • dates kept only once PostHog accepted the ping;
    • an unticked checkbox staying off during an in-flight ping.
  • Locally: the electron and i18n suites (1,462 tests), both typechecks, i18n:check and Biome. The full suite runs in CI.
  • Not yet checked: real app_active events in PostHog. They will show from the first release that ships this.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an optional daily anonymous count of active installations. You can turn it off from the app’s tray menu or by setting DO_NOT_TRACK=1.
  • Documentation
    • Updated privacy information to explain what the count includes, how to disable it, and that it uses no persistent installation identifier to link reports across days.
    • Clarified when connecting an AI provider sends chat or caption data to that provider.

The app sends at most one app_active event a day to PostHog EU: version, OS, architecture, install channel, and whether it is the first ping of the week and of the month, so WAU and MAU are counted without any identifier. No install ID, GeoIP off, no person profile. It never runs in dev, in CI or under DO_NOT_TRACK, and a tray checkbox turns it off. The site's "no analytics" claim and the FAQ now describe exactly this, in all eight languages.

📝 Walkthrough

The app now sends optional daily anonymous active-install counts to PostHog. A tray setting and DO_NOT_TRACK control enablement. Tests cover ping planning and sending. FAQ and product pages describe the count, opt-out controls, and related network activity in supported locales.

Layer / File(s) Summary
Ping planning and sending
electron/usage-ping.ts, electron/usage-ping.test.ts
The usage-ping module plans eligible events, stores accepted UTC period keys, and sends events with app facts. Tests cover date keys, skip conditions, request outcomes, and state changes.
Startup, tray setting, and localized label
electron/main.ts, src/i18n/locales/*/common.json
The main process loads the saved setting, sends startup and recurring pings, and adds a conditional tray checkbox. Locale files add its label.
Usage-count and network disclosures
website/docs/faq.md, website/i18n/*/docusaurus-plugin-content-docs/current/faq.md, website/src/pages/*, website/i18n/*/docusaurus-plugin-content-pages/*
FAQ and product pages describe the anonymous daily count and how to disable it. FAQ updates also describe data sent to connected AI providers.

The change adds an opt-out daily active-install ping and related disclosures. No concrete merge-blocking behavior is established; the deployed PostHog IP-retention setting remains unverified, so that part of the disclosure cannot be confirmed.
