GitLab Shell handles Git SSH sessions for GitLab and modifies the list of authorized keys. GitLab Shell is not a Unix shell nor a replacement for Bash or Zsh.
GitLab supports Git LFS authentication through SSH.
Development documentation for GitLab Shell has moved into the gitlab repository.

Releases are automated by the release:prepare and release:tag CI/CD jobs, which run support/release.sh:
- In the latest
mainpipeline, run the manualrelease:preparejob. It opens aRelease vX.Y.Zmerge request, e.g. Release v14.58.0, that updatesVERSIONandCHANGELOGwith the merge requests merged since the latest tag.- The minor version is bumped by default. To bump the patch or major version, set the
RELEASE_BUMPvariable topatchormajorwhen running the job. - To preview the changelog locally, run
support/release.sh changelog.
- The minor version is bumped by default. To bump the patch or major version, set the
- Review and merge the release merge request. Edit
CHANGELOGin the merge request if needed, but keep the first line asvX.Y.Z. - When the merge request is merged, the
release:tagjob in themainpipeline creates thevX.Y.Ztag and its release, with the version'sCHANGELOGentries as release notes. - Renovate opens a
gitlab-org/gitlabmerge request to updateGITLAB_SHELL_VERSIONto the new tag. Review that merge request instead of creating a new one. - Announce in
#gitlab-shella new version has been created.
Both jobs refuse a version that's already tagged in gitlab-org/security/gitlab-shell.
Security releases are tagged there first, and those tags aren't visible here until the security release is synced back.
Releasing the same version from this repository would make the repositories diverge. If a job fails for this reason,
wait until the security release is synced back, or choose the next free version.
Both jobs need these protected and masked CI/CD variables:
GITLAB_SHELL_RELEASE_TOKEN: a project access token with theapiscope and the Maintainer role.CI_JOB_TOKENcan't be used because it can't create merge requests, and tags created with it don't trigger tag pipelines.SECURITY_REPO_READ_TOKEN: a token with theread_apiscope and at least the Reporter role ingitlab-org/security/gitlab-shell.
If the jobs can't be used, follow the same steps manually: create the release merge request, create an annotated vX.Y.Z tag on its merge commit, and let Renovate bump GITLAB_SHELL_VERSION.
Re-running release:tag for the merge commit afterwards creates the missing release for a tag created by hand.
This repository is mirrored to security and dev mirrors. Mirror syncs happen within minutes of changes to the canonical repo, so please follow these guidelines when managing tags:
- Use caution when deleting and recreating tags - if a tag has already been synced to the mirrors, recreating it will cause SHA divergence and break the mirror sync.
- If a tag needs to be re-created, create an issue on the Delivery tracker and coordinate with the release managers to delete the tag from all mirrors (security + dev) before recreating it on canonical.
- If a mirror sync fails due to tag SHA divergence, contact the release managers in
#g_release_and_deployto manually fix the mirrors.
