New Pull Request Checklist

Issue Description

The SDK cannot be installed on PHP 8.4 or 8.5, because composer.json pins
"php": ">=8.1 <8.4". Three deprecations also surface on those versions:

  1. ParseException::__construct() declares Exception $previous = null.
    Implicitly nullable parameters are deprecated as of PHP 8.4.
  2. ParseStream::getFileContents() reads the locally scoped
    $http_response_header, deprecated as of PHP 8.5 in favour of
    http_get_last_response_headers().
  3. ParseCurl::close() calls curl_close(), deprecated as of PHP 8.5 because it
    has had no effect since PHP 8.0.

Closes: #529

Note on #528: @zeliard91's PR proposes the same three source fixes together with
a larger test and CI modernisation, and has been open since September. This PR is the
minimal source-only subset, in case the maintainers prefer to land the compatibility
fixes as a first, easy-to-review slice — which is what #528's author suggested on
3 October. Close whichever is less useful; I have no preference beyond seeing the
fixes land.

Approach

  • ParseException.php: declare the parameter as ?Exception $previous = null.
  • ParseCurl.php: drop the curl_close() call. Setting the handle to null
    releases it on every supported version.
  • ParseStream.php: call http_get_last_response_headers() when it exists, and
    keep the old read for PHP 8.1 to 8.4, where the function is absent.
  • composer.json: ">=8.1 <8.4" becomes ">=8.1 <8.6", following the step taken
    in feat: Add support for PHP 8.3 #520 for PHP 8.3.
  • .github/workflows/ci.yml: add PHP 8.4 and 8.5 to the matrix.

Why the legacy read uses ??

On PHP 8.5 a direct read of $http_response_header raises the deprecation at
compile time, so the notice appears even when the branch never runs, and even
inside isset(). Four patterns measured on 8.5.8 and 8.5.12:

pattern deprecation
isset($http_response_header) ? $http_response_header : [] yes
$http_response_header yes
$http_response_header ?? [] no
get_defined_vars()['http_response_header'] ?? [] no

A function_exists() guard alone is therefore not enough: the dead branch must also
avoid a direct read. ?? is the smaller of the two working forms and keeps the
variable name visible for readers.

Compatibility with PHP 8.1 to 8.4

http_get_last_response_headers() arrives in 8.5, so the guard selects the old read
on every earlier version. Behaviour is unchanged there: $http_response_header ?? []
returns the same array the previous code assigned, and yields [] instead of an
undefined variable notice when the HTTP wrapper produced no response.

Verification

  • All 42 files under src/ pass php -l with error_reporting=E_ALL on PHP 8.5:
    no deprecations and no syntax errors.
  • A live request through the patched getFileContents() returns the response
    headers on PHP 8.3.32, 8.4.26, 8.5.8 and 8.5.12. The first entry is
    HTTP/1.1 200 OK on every version.
  • curl_close() raises Function curl_close() is deprecated since 8.5 on PHP 8.5
    before the change, and nothing after it. Note that a php -l sweep does not
    catch this one, because the notice is raised at run time.

TODOs before merging

  • Add tests — no new behaviour is introduced, and the existing test-stream
    suite covers ParseStream::getFileContents(). Happy to add a regression test
    that asserts a deprecation-free call if you want one.
  • Add changes to documentation — in-code comments explain the version guard; the
    README states no PHP version range.
  • Add changelog entry — generated by semantic-release from the feat: commit.
  • Confirm the upper bound. <8.6 follows feat: Add support for PHP 8.3 #520. feat: Add support for PHP 8.5 #528 proposes an open-ended
    >=8.1 instead. Tell me which you prefer and I will match it.
  • CI on 8.4 and 8.5 needs the toolchain work in feat: Add support for PHP 8.5 #528: phpDocumentor 3.0.0 cannot
    install on 8.5, and one composer.lock cannot span 8.1 to 8.5 because PHPUnit
    10, 11 and 12 cover different ranges. This PR only widens the matrix; it does
    not fix those steps.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added support for PHP 8.4 and PHP 8.5.
    • Expanded compatibility to PHP versions 8.1 through 8.5.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved HTTP response-header handling across supported PHP environments.
    • Updated connection cleanup for compatibility with PHP 8.5.
    • Improved exception handling when no underlying exception is provided.

The SDK cannot be installed on PHP 8.4 or 8.5 because composer.json pins
`"php": ">=8.1 <8.4"`. Three deprecations also surface on those versions.

1. `ParseException::__construct()` declared `Exception $previous = null`.
   Implicitly nullable parameters are deprecated as of PHP 8.4.
2. `ParseStream::getFileContents()` read the locally scoped
   `$http_response_header`, deprecated as of PHP 8.5 in favour of
   `http_get_last_response_headers()`.
3. `ParseCurl::close()` called `curl_close()`, deprecated as of PHP 8.5
   because it has had no effect since PHP 8.0.

The legacy header read is null coalesced on purpose. On PHP 8.5 a direct
read of `$http_response_header` raises the deprecation at compile time,
so it fires even when the branch never runs, and even inside `isset()`.
Four patterns measured on 8.5.8 and 8.5.12:

  isset($http_response_header) ? $http_response_header : []   deprecation
  $http_response_header                                       deprecation
  $http_response_header ?? []                                 none
  get_defined_vars()['http_response_header'] ?? []            none

A `function_exists()` guard alone is therefore not sufficient.

Verification: all 42 files under src/ pass `php -l` with
`error_reporting=E_ALL` on PHP 8.5, and a live request through the
patched `getFileContents()` returns the response headers on 8.3.32,
8.4.26, 8.5.8 and 8.5.12, with `HTTP/1.1 200 OK` as the first entry.

The upper bound follows parse-community#520, which moved to `<8.4` when 8.3 landed.

🚀 Thanks for opening this pull request! We appreciate your effort in improving the project. Please let us know once your pull request is ready for review.

Tip

  • Keep pull requests small. Large PRs will be rejected. Break complex features into smaller, incremental PRs.
  • Use Test Driven Development. Write failing tests before implementing functionality. Ensure tests pass.
  • Group code into logical blocks. Add a short comment before each block to explain its purpose.
  • We offer conceptual guidance. Coding is up to you. PRs must be merge-ready for human review.
  • Our review focuses on concept, not quality. PRs with code issues will be rejected. Use an AI agent.
  • Human review time is precious. Avoid review ping-pong. Inspect and test your AI-generated code.

Note

Please respond to review comments from AI agents just like you would to comments from a human reviewer. Let the reviewer resolve their own comments, unless they have reviewed and accepted your commit, or agreed with your explanation for why the feedback was incorrect.

Caution

Pull requests must be written using an AI agent with human supervision. Pull requests written entirely by a human will likely be rejected, because of lower code quality, higher review effort and the higher risk of introducing bugs. Please note that AI review comments on this pull request alone do not satisfy this requirement. Our CI and AI review are safeguards, not development tools. If many issues are flagged, rethink your development approach. Invest more effort in planning and design rather than using review cycles to fix low-quality code.

📝 Walkthrough

The package now permits PHP versions through 8.5. The stream and cURL clients and the exception constructor were updated for PHP compatibility. The CI build matrix now includes PHP 8.4 and 8.5.

Changes: PHP runtime support

Layer / File(s) Summary
PHP version contract
composer.json, src/Parse/ParseException.php
The Composer constraint now permits PHP versions >=8.1 and <8.6. The exception constructor marks its previous exception parameter as nullable.
HTTP client compatibility
src/Parse/HttpClients/ParseStream.php, src/Parse/HttpClients/ParseCurl.php
The stream client uses the available response-header API and defaults missing headers to an empty array. The cURL client releases its handle by setting it to null instead of calling curl_close().
PHP version CI coverage
.github/workflows/ci.yml
The build test matrix now includes PHP 8.4 and 8.5.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to ab543

The PHP 8.4 and 8.5 source changes look safe, but the CI jobs added for those versions run on a retired runner image and will not execute. Move the workflow to a supported runner before merging. The stale-header edge case and the missing job permissions are minor follow-ups.

Explanation

Issue #529 requires the PHP upper bound change, PHP 8.4 and 8.5 deprecation fixes, PHP 8.4 and 8.5 CI entries, and PHP 8.1 compatibility. composer.json now permits >=8.1 <8.6. The reviewed changes update ParseException, use capability-based response-header retrieval in ParseStream, remove curl_close() from ParseCurl, and add both PHP versions to .github/workflows/ci.yml. These changes directly satisfy the stated coding requirements. Issue #529 does not require the broader CI toolchain, documentation, changelog, or regression-test work identified as incomplete in the PR description.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed files are limited to the Composer PHP constraint, the CI version matrix, and the three source locations named by issue #529. The comments in ParseStream and ParseCurl document the compatibility changes. No unrelated behavior or unrelated project area is changed.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 3 functions across 3 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Full details: Security Check

Explanation

PASS. The authoritative diff changes only the PHP version constraint, CI matrix, nullable exception typing, response-header API selection, and CurlHandle release. ParseStreamHttpClient still uses the existing request URL, stream context, and response parsing; ParseCurlHttpClient still sets the same URL, TLS verification, headers, and request options. No changed line adds command execution, deserialization, file/path access, authentication handling, credential exposure, or a new network trust path. The security-related repository search found no advisory files, and the potentially security-sensitive URL and TLS code is unchanged.

Full details: Engage In Review Feedback

Explanation

Two Minor findings remain outstanding with no recorded discussion or resolution: stale headers in src/Parse/HttpClients/ParseStream.php and missing least-privilege permissions in .github/workflows/ci.yml. The review context contains no prior engagement, implementing commit, or reviewer retraction. This does not satisfy the required feedback-engagement condition.

Resolution

Engage with the reviewer on both findings. For each finding, either implement the requested change in a commit and reference it in the discussion, or provide a convincing technical response that leads the reviewer to retract the finding.

Move the matrix off the retired ubuntu-20.04 runner.

The new PHP 8.4 and PHP 8.5 jobs use this runner. GitHub retired the ubuntu-20.04 hosted image on April 15, 2025, so these CI jobs cannot execute on the supported hosted runner fleet. Use ubuntu-22.04 or ubuntu-24.04, then verify that the selected package source provides all requested PHP versions and extensions. (github.blog)

Set least-privilege permissions for the build job.

The build job runs checked-out repository and dependency code through Composer, npm, and test commands. Without explicit permissions, its GITHUB_TOKEN uses repository or organization defaults. A write-enabled default can expose write access to that code. Grant only contents: read unless a step requires more.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Prevent stale headers on non-HTTP reads.

If an HTTP request precedes getFileContents() with a local file or another non-HTTP URL, http_get_last_response_headers() can return the earlier request’s headers. The HTTP wrapper clears stored headers when it starts an HTTP request, but a non-HTTP read does not. Clear stored headers before file_get_contents() on the supported path, or return no response headers for non-HTTP reads. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
