Depends on #1796.

Summary

  • This PR adds support for getting the actual CPU usage and CPU limit of the container.
  • add parseable_process_cpu_usage_cores
  • First, the cgroup path of the current Parseable process is resolved.
  • cgroup v2 is checked first.
  • In v2, cpu.max is used to get the CPU limit and cpu.stat to get cumulative CPU usage.
  • If complete v2 data is not available, cgroup v1 is tried.
  • In v1, CPU limit is calculated from quota/period and usage is taken from cpuacct.usage.
  • Usage and limit are taken from the same cgroup scope to avoid mismatched values.
  • The difference between current and previous cumulative usage is used to calculate the actual CPU cores being used.
  • A sample is taken every 5 seconds, and the average of the last 12 samples is stored as the one-minute average metric.
  • The existing process CPU percentage metric remains unchanged.

This allows CPU utilization to be calculated as usage_cores / limit_cores * 100.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • CPU metrics now report process usage in CPU cores alongside the available core limit.
    • Linux metrics include container CPU usage and quota limits where available; unlimited quotas use the detected CPU count.
    • CPU usage is smoothed across recent samples, helping reduce fluctuations in reported values.
    • On non-Linux systems, CPU limits use the detected CPU count, and process usage is reported in cores.

Findings

Minor Skip unavailable CPU usage samples. Do not record them as 0.0.

Walkthrough

Process sampling now collects CPU limits and usage in cores. Linux uses cgroup v1 or v2 metrics; other platforms use the detected CPU count and process CPU percentage. A new Prometheus gauge reports the rolling average of the latest 12 CPU usage samples.

Changes

CPU Core Metrics

Layer / File(s) Summary
Rolling CPU usage gauge
src/metrics/mod.rs
Adds a 12-sample rolling average and registers the CPU-usage-in-cores gauge. The test checks the retained samples and average.
Cgroup CPU collection
src/handlers/http/resource_check.rs
Reads CPU quota and usage from cgroup v1 or v2, calculates usage rates, and records usage alongside process metrics. Linux-only tests cover usage parsing and rate calculation.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat: add process CPU usage cores metric" matches the main change. The changeset adds the parseable_process_cpu_usage_cores gauge (PROCESS_CPU_USAGE_CORES and record_process_cpu_usage_cores), which records container CPU usage in cores from cgroup v2/v1 data. The title is concise, specific, and follows the conventional commit style. It does not describe the cgroup limit logic or the rolling average, but those are supporting details.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description covers the goal and the key changes. It explains the cgroup v2 and v1 resolution, the usage and limit calculation, the 5-second sampling with a 12-sample average, and the unchanged existing CPU percentage metric. It also has a dependency note (#1796) and a screenshot. It does not follow the template fully. It omits the 'Fixes #XXXX' line, which may be optional because no issue is linked. It also omits the template checklist (testing confirmation, code comments, documentation). The description does not state whether tests were run or whether documentation was added. The 'Description' heading is also missing the 'possible solutions and rationale' content.

Resolution

Consider the following additions to match the template. Remove the 'Fixes #XXXX' line if no issue applies. Add a short rationale for choosing cgroup v2 first with v1 fallback. Complete the checklist items: state whether log ingestion and query were tested, confirm comments were added for non-obvious code, and state whether documentation was added or not needed.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 12 functions across 2 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.
