Walkthrough

The project metadata and CI pipeline update Python version support and job configurations. The executor and task scheduler map methods add typed parameters and optional buffering. The task scheduler forwards buffering conditionally by Python version and defines boolean behavior.

Changes: CI Python Version Updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Validation and benchmark jobs
pyproject.toml, .github/workflows/pipeline.yml
Project metadata allows Python versions below 3.16 and includes the Python 3.15 classifier. The mypy, minimal-install, pip-check, and benchmark jobs use updated Python versions.
Notebook jobs
.github/workflows/pipeline.yml
The notebook and notebook integration jobs now use Python 3.14.
Platform-specific test jobs
.github/workflows/pipeline.yml
Flux, Slurm, and Windows jobs use updated Python versions. The MPICH and OpenMPI matrices add Python 3.15 configurations while retaining existing Python 3.14 configurations.

Map Buffering and Typing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Executor map API and scheduler forwarding
src/executorlib/executor/base.py, src/executorlib/task_scheduler/base.py
Both map methods add callable, iterable, and iterator annotations and an optional buffersize parameter. The executor passes it to the scheduler. The scheduler forwards it to its superclass on Python 3.14 and later.
Scheduler boolean behavior
src/executorlib/task_scheduler/base.py
TaskSchedulerBase.__bool__ now always returns True.

The new buffersize option can hang a map iterator after executor shutdown on Python 3.14 and later. On older Python versions it is silently ignored, so submission stays unbounded. Both should be fixed before merge, and both fixes are small.

Set a read-only default for workflow jobs.

The workflow has a job-level write permission for autobot, but the other jobs inherit the repository or organization default. Those jobs execute checked-out code. Set contents: read at the workflow level while retaining the explicit permissions on autobot.

@copilot Fix the mypy issue:

src/executorlib/task_scheduler/base.py:180: error: Signature of "map" incompatible with supertype "concurrent.futures._base.Executor" [override]

...

Fixed in d04d0d2. Both overrides now match the generic Executor.map signature and support Python 3.14+ buffersize; the Python 3.15 mypy check passes.

Reject or implement buffersize on Python versions before 3.14.

If a caller sets buffersize on Python 3.13, this branch falls through to super().map() without that value. Python 3.13 then collects the iterables eagerly. A caller that expects bounded submission can queue every task or remain blocked on an unbounded iterable. Implement buffering on those versions, or reject a non-None value before the fallback call.
concurrent.futures — Launching parallel tasks — Python 3.14.7 documentation

<location>https://docs.python.org/3.14/library/concurrent.futures.html</location>
<excerpt>citeturn0search0 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: last month; map(fn, *iterables, timeout=None, chunksize=1, buffersize=None)¶ ... Changed in version 3.14: Added the buffersize parameter. ... with concurrent.futures.ProcessPoolExecutor() as executor: ... The proposal which described this feature for inclusion in the Python standard library.

# `concurrent.futures` — Launching parallel tasks¶

Added in version 3.2.

Source code: Lib/concurrent/futures/thread.py, Lib/concurrent/futures/process.py, and Lib/concurrent/futures/interpreter.py

* * *

The `concurrent.futures` module provides a high-level interface for asynchronously executing callables.

The asynchronous execution can be performed with threads, using `ThreadPoolExecutor` or `InterpreterPoolExecutor`, or separate processes, using `ProcessPoolExecutor`. Each implements the same interface, which is defined by the abstract `Executor` class.

`concurrent.futures.Future` must not be confused with `asyncio.Future`, which is designed for use with `asyncio` tasks and coroutines. See the asyncio’s Future documentation for a detailed comparison of the two.

Availability: not WASI.

This module does not work or is not available on WebAssembly. See WebAssembly platforms for more information.

## Executor Objects¶

class concurrent.futures.Executor¶

An abstract class that provides methods to execute calls asynchronously. It should not be used directly, but through its concrete subclasses.

submit(fn, / (Positional-only parameter separator (PEP 570)), *args, **kwargs)¶

Schedules the callable, fn, to be executed as `fn(*args, **kwargs)` and returns a `Future` object representing the execution of the callable.

    with ThreadPoolExecutor(max_workers=1) as executor:
        future = executor.submit(pow, 323, 1235)
        print(future.result())

map(fn, *iterables, timeout=None, chunksize=1, buffersize=None)¶

Similar to `map(fn, *iterables)` except:

  * The iterables are collected immediately rather than lazily, unless a buffersize is specified to limit the number of submitted tasks whose results have not yet been yielded. If the buffer is full, iteration over the iterables pauses until a result is yielded from the buffer.

  * fn is executed asynchronously and several calls to fn may be made concurrently.

The returned iterator raises a `TimeoutError` if `__next__()` is called and the result isn’t available after timeout seconds from the original call to `Executor.map()`. timeout can be an int or a float. If timeout is not specified or `None`, there is no limit to the wait time.

If a fn call raises an exception, then that exception will be raised when its value is retrieved from the iterator.

When using `ProcessPoolExecutor`, this method chops iterables into a number of chunks which it submits to the pool as separate tasks. The (approximate) size of these chunks can be specified by setting chunksize to a positive integer. For very long iterables, using a large value for chunksize can significantly improve performance compared to the default size of 1. With `ThreadPoolExecutor` and `InterpreterPoolExecutor`, chunksize has no effect.

Changed in version 3.5: Added the chunksize parameter.

Changed in version 3.14: Added the buffersize parameter.

shutdown(wait=True, * (Keyword-only parameters separator (PEP 3102)), cancel_futures=False)¶

Signal the executor that it should free any resources that it is using when the currently pending futures are done executing. Calls to `Executor.submit()` and `Executor.map()` made after shutdown will raise `RuntimeError`.

If wait is `True` then this method will not return until all the pending futures are done executing and the resources associated with the executor have been freed. If wait is `False` then this method will return immediately and the resources associated with the executor will be freed when all pending futures are done executing. Regardless of the value of wait, the entire Python prog…[truncated]</excerpt>

This change does not affect Windows or macOS, where :ref:`'spawn' <multiprocessing-start-method-spawn>` remains the default start method.

If the threading incompatible fork method is required, you must explicitly request it by supplying a multiprocessing context mp_context to :class:`~concurrent.futures.ProcessPoolExecutor`.

See :ref:`forkserver restrictions <multiprocessing-programming-forkserver>` for information and differences with the fork method and how this change may affect existing code with mutable global shared variables and/or shared objects that can not be automatically :mod:`pickled <pickle>`.

  * Add two new methods to :class:`~concurrent.futures.ProcessPoolExecutor`, :meth:`~concurrent.futures.ProcessPoolExecutor.terminate_workers` and :meth:`~concurrent.futures.ProcessPoolExecutor.kill_workers`, as ways to terminate or kill all living worker processes in the given pool. (Contributed by Charles Machalow in :gh:`130849`.)

  * Add the optional buffersize parameter to :meth:`Executor.map <concurrent.futures.Executor.map>` to limit the number of submitted tasks whose results have not yet been yielded. If the buffer is full, iteration over the iterables pauses until a result is yielded from the buffer. (Contributed by Enzo Bonnal and Josh Rosenberg in :gh:`74028`.)

Reject deferred submissions after shutdown.

TaskSchedulerBase.submit returns an unqueued Future after shutdown. On Python 3.14 and later, buffered Executor.map submits more tasks while its result iterator is consumed. If shutdown occurs after map() returns but before iteration finishes, iteration can wait indefinitely for that future.

The public Executor.submit already raises RuntimeError after shutdown. Apply the same guard to TaskSchedulerBase.submit and its BlockAllocationTaskScheduler.submit override.

Apply the same guard before creating f in BlockAllocationTaskScheduler.submit.

Review comment at @src/executorlib/task_scheduler/base.py at line 226:
Update TaskSchedulerBase.submit and its BlockAllocationTaskScheduler.submit
override to check whether shutdown has begun before creating or returning a
Future, and raise RuntimeError instead of allowing a deferred submission after
shutdown.
