This will also disable console-plugin deployment, is that expected ? |
yes, this is expected because the console plugin resources (Service, Deployment, ConfigMap) are deployed into the openshift-gitops namespace. When DISABLE_DEFAULT_ARGOCD_INSTANCE=true, the namespace does not exist and plugin resources have nowhere to be deployed, please correct me if I have understood this incorrectly. |

@keithchong, any comments? Are you ok with such behavior? |

IMO, this should go in after #1231 |
|
I agree with Oliver that this should go in after #1231. I am unsure why the console plugin should be disabled if the flag is set to true. In 1231, the console plugin resources are created in the operator's namespace. So whether DISABLE_DEFAULT_ARGOCD_INSTANCE is true or false, that should not impact that? eg. the plugin resources will still be created. It's just that we won't have the default Argo CD instance. The console plugin should still exist/be enabled/work regardless. |
@keithchong yes after #1231 gets merged the console plugin resources will be created in the operator's namespace. I will make necessary changes in this PR once #1231 gets merged |

Namespace is never created when DisableDefaultInstall=true and PluginNamespace is the default namespace, causing a permanent reconcile-error loop
Summary
This PR gates namespace creation behind !r.DisableDefaultInstall:
// controllers/gitopsservice_controller.go:272
if !r.DisableDefaultInstall {
// Create namespace if it doesn't already exist (only when default install is enabled)
namespaceRef := newRestrictedNamespace(namespace)
err = r.Client.Get(ctx, types.NamespacedName{Name: namespace}, namespaceRef)
...
}But console-plugin reconciliation is not gated the same way — it runs unconditionally later in Reconcile, regardless of DisableDefaultInstall:
// controllers/gitopsservice_controller.go:319-321
// The console plugin is decoupled from the default Argo CD instance, so it is reconciled into
// its own namespace regardless of whether the default install is disabled.
if r.PluginNamespace != namespace {
// ... only creates r.PluginNamespace here, when it differs from the default namespace
}
...
return r.reconcilePlugin(instance, request, isPF5) // called unconditionallyWhen r.PluginNamespace == namespace (the default/common configuration — see below) and DisableDefaultInstall == true, neither code path creates the namespace:
- The block at line 272 is skipped because
DisableDefaultInstallistrue. - The block at line 321 is skipped because
r.PluginNamespace == namespace, so the!=guard isfalse.
reconcilePlugin is then called anyway and attempts to Client.Create(...) the plugin Deployment, Service, ConfigMap, and ConsolePlugin resources into a namespace that doesn't exist.
Why PluginNamespace == namespace is a real, supported configuration
This isn't a hypothetical edge case — it's explicitly handled elsewhere in the codebase as a first-class scenario:
cleanupOldPluginResourcesspecial-cases it directly:// controllers/consoleplugin.go:624-627 // cleanupOldPluginResources removes plugin resources from the old namespace (openshift-gitops) // after they have been moved to the operator namespace... func (r *ReconcileGitopsService) cleanupOldPluginResources(ctx context.Context) error { if r.PluginNamespace == serviceNamespace { return nil }
- The unit test helper that constructs the reconciler for most of the test suite sets it up this way:
// controllers/gitopsservice_controller_test.go:1174-1180 func newReconcileGitOpsService(client client.Client, scheme *runtime.Scheme) *ReconcileGitopsService { return &ReconcileGitopsService{ Client: client, Scheme: scheme, PluginNamespace: serviceNamespace, } }
Reproduction / failure scenario
- Operator is configured with
PluginNamespace == openshift-gitops(the default plugin namespace) andDISABLE_DEFAULT_ARGOCD_INSTANCE=true. openshift-gitopsnamespace does not exist (e.g. fresh cluster, or it was previously deleted).Reconcileruns:- Skips namespace creation (
DisableDefaultInstall == true). - Skips the plugin-namespace creation block (
PluginNamespace == namespace). - Falls through to
r.reconcilePlugin(...)(controllers/gitopsservice_controller.go:375/:378), which callsr.Client.Create(...)for the plugin Deployment/Service/ConfigMap/ConsolePlugin (controllers/consoleplugin.go:446,510,549,604).
- Skips namespace creation (
- On a real cluster, each
Createfails viaNamespaceLifecycleadmission (namespace doesn't exist), soReconcilereturns an error. - The controller re-enters
Reconcileindefinitely, hitting the same error every time — a permanent reconcile-error loop.
This is the same class of bug that was just fixed in d86d9151 ("prevent infinite reconcile loop when NamespaceManagement is disabled"), reintroduced via this change.
Why existing tests don't catch it
util.IsConsoleAPIFound() defaults to false, and no test in controllers/gitopsservice_controller_test.go calls SetConsoleAPIFound(true). Because of this, reconcilePlugin short-circuits before ever reaching the Client.Create(...) calls, so the unit test suite never actually exercises plugin-resource creation — this gap in configuration (DisableDefaultInstall=true + PluginNamespace==namespace) has no test coverage either way.
Suggested fix
Ensure the target namespace is created (or its existence is verified) before reconcilePlugin runs, independent of DisableDefaultInstall — e.g. by moving/duplicating the namespace-existence check so it covers r.PluginNamespace in all cases, not only when it differs from the default namespace and only when DisableDefaultInstall is false.

What does this PR do / why we need it:
This PR prevents the openshift-gitops namespace from being created when DISABLE_DEFAULT_ARGOCD_INSTANCE=true is set. Previously, the flag only prevented the ArgoCD instance creation but still created the namespace.
