📋 Summary

Brings the OpenSearch plugin up to the current build-plugin standard and makes it hybrid, so it can reach private clusters through a relay agent.

Until now the plugin was a thin wrapper around _search. This adds cluster, node and index monitoring with imported objects and out-of-the-box dashboards, optional OpenTelemetry service discovery from logs, API key authentication, and fixes to the existing search stream.

Hybrid and connection

  • type is now hybrid. Deploying upgrades the existing cloud plugin in place and adds an on-prem variant for relay agents.
  • schemaVersion is now 2.1, with keywords, objectTypes, a corrected documentation link and a description of what users can monitor.
  • The custom Ignore certificate errors field is removed; the platform now provides this toggle with the same config key.
  • The instance URL is trimmed of whitespace and trailing slashes, and validated as a URL.

Authentication and setup

  • New API key option for OpenSearch 3.7+ (Authorization: ApiKey os_…), alongside username/password and no authentication.
  • New configValidation.json: a required connect-and-authenticate check, plus a warning-only check for cluster monitoring permissions, so search-only users can still save.

Monitoring (new)

  • Streams: Cluster Info, Cluster Health, Nodes, Indices. The old hidden indices lookup is reworked into a visible stats stream.
  • Imports Node and Index objects. Node roles is a multi-value property.
  • _cat requests ask for JSON explicitly; previously they only returned JSON when the Accept header happened to trigger it. System and hidden indices are excluded.
  • Index health and open/closed status are state columns, so closed indices show as unknown.
  • The Index filter is applied in the request with ignore_unavailable, so a deleted daily index doesn't fail the stream.

Search fixes and additions (search keeps its name and its index and query parameters)

  • Fixed: named or keyed bucket aggregations (for example filters) returned an object instead of rows.
  • Fixed: fields, docvalue_fields and script_fields results produced empty rows.
  • Fixed: percentiles with keyed: false now return rows.
  • New optional Time field applies the tile's timeframe as a range filter. When it is unset, the request body is unchanged.
  • Date histogram buckets gain a bucketTime timestamp column.
  • Hits gain hidden _id, _index and _score columns.
  • Error messages show OpenSearch's root cause rather than a generic HTTP 400.
  • Aggregation selection is unchanged. OpenSearch places pipeline aggregations last in its response, so the existing "last aggregation" logic is correct.
  • Display name is now Search Results.
  • The index picker suggests a wildcard pattern for each family of dated or rollover indices.
  • New Document Count stream for KPIs and monitors.

OpenTelemetry services (new, optional)

  • An Import OpenTelemetry services toggle imports a Service object for each service found in OpenTelemetry logs. Defaults match the OpenTelemetry Collector OpenSearch exporter (ss4o_logs-*,otel-logs-*, resource.service.name.keyword, @timestamp, severity.number).
  • Services carry environments, k8sNamespaces and k8sDeployments as multi-value properties.
  • Service Log Volume and Service Logs read those properties back onto their rows.
  • New streams: Services, Service Log Volume, Service Logs.

Content and docs

  • Dashboards: Overview of the cluster, plus Node, Index and Service perspectives. Health states use blocks tiles.
  • New custom_types.json.
  • docs/setup.md and the root README.md are merged into a complete docs/README.md.

🧩 Plugin details

  • Plugin name: OpenSearch (plugins/OpenSearch/v1), 1.0.4 → 1.1.0
  • Type of change:
    • Bug fix
    • New datastream
    • Enhancement to existing datastream
    • Performance improvement
    • Documentation / metadata / logo
    • Other (please describe): hybrid plugin type (relay agent support), API key authentication, Node/Index/Service imports, OOB dashboards

🧪 Testing

Tested against a live, private OpenSearch 3.7.0 cluster running in Kubernetes, with no Security plugin, reached through a relay agent in the same cluster using the on-prem variant, on a dev SquaredUp tenant.

  • Connection: both setup checks pass through the relay agent.
  • Request headers: checked against an HTTP echo endpoint using a temporary cloud data source.
    • API key mode sends Authorization: ApiKey <key>, and a pasted ApiKey prefix is normalised.
    • Basic mode sends the correct Basic header.
    • No-auth mode sends no Authorization header.
  • Import: succeeded with 1 Node, 23 Indices (system indices excluded) and 12 Services.
    • Multi-value properties are stored as arrays. This is confirmed by the read-back columns on Service Log Volume and Service Logs.
  • Nodes and Indices: the optional object filters were tested with matching objects, non-matching objects and a mix of both.
  • Search Results:
    • Existing request bodies return the same visible columns as before.
    • The Time field narrows results to the tile timeframe.
    • Date histograms get bucketTime.
    • Named filters, keyed: false percentiles, fields and pipeline aggregations (a max_bucket listed first) all work.
    • A terms aggregation on a text field returns OpenSearch's root-cause message.
  • Document Count: works with no query, a query clause and a full request body, with and without a time field. An unknown index returns a clear error.
  • OTel streams:
    • Toggle off returns 0 rows without error.
    • Toggle on returns data for the last hour, and the import (no timeframe) falls back to the last 24 hours.
    • Service filters, the minimum severity floor (Warn and Error only) and the comma-separated index pattern default were all verified.
  • Dashboards: all four were copied into a workspace and every tile was run against live data. No tile errors.

Not tested:

  • A cluster with the Security plugin enabled, so the readall and readall_and_monitor permission behaviour is untested. API key and basic auth were verified only at the header level.
  • Cloud mode against a real cluster.
  • Data Prepper document layouts.

⚠️ Breaking changes

Does this PR introduce any breaking changes?

  • No
  • Yes (please describe):

search keeps its name, parameters and output for existing request bodies. The new search columns are additive and hidden by default. The removed indices lookup stream was hidden and fed only the index picker. Saved certificate settings carry over to the platform toggle. Switching to hybrid upgrades the existing cloud plugin in place.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added dashboards for OpenSearch clusters, nodes, indices, and services, including resource, index, and log views.
    • Added data sources for cluster health and details, index statistics, document counts, search results, and OpenTelemetry logs.
    • Added API-key authentication and optional OpenTelemetry service import with configurable log fields and filters.
    • Added connection and cluster-monitoring access checks.
  • Improvements
    • Expanded index and node details and improved the presentation of search and aggregation results.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on configuring the plugin, authentication, monitoring, and OpenTelemetry service import.

The OpenSearch plugin was a cloud-only wrapper around _search, built
before the build-plugin conventions existed. It could not reach the
private clusters most OpenSearch users run, imported nothing, shipped
no dashboards and had no config validation, so bad credentials saved
silently.

The plugin is now hybrid, so the existing cloud plugin is upgraded in
place and an on-prem variant runs through a relay agent. It imports
nodes and indices and adds cluster, node and index monitoring with an
overview dashboard and per-object perspectives. API key authentication
is new for OpenSearch 3.7 and later. The custom certificate checkbox
gives way to the platform's own toggle, which uses the same config key.

Optional OpenTelemetry service discovery imports a Service for each
service writing logs, with environments, Kubernetes namespaces and
deployments as multi-value properties. The service log streams read
those back onto their rows so tiles can filter by them. Pods were left
out deliberately because they churn far faster than the 12-hour import.

The search stream keeps its name, parameters and output for existing
tiles. It now handles keyed buckets and fields results, both of which
previously broke, and gains an optional time field. The rule of
returning the last aggregation in the response is kept on purpose:
OpenSearch places pipeline aggregations last, so choosing by request
order would have broken them.

Base config expressions avoid backslashes, because the platform strips
them before evaluation; an escaped regex there broke the URL on the
relay agent.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 2b249

The plugin now accepts plain HTTP URLs while sending a username and password or an API key. This can expose credentials on the network, so require HTTPS before merging. Metric aggregations that return zero are also reshaped inconsistently. The other findings are smaller wording and format fixes.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 2b249

Relay support and API keys extend an existing credential-exposure risk: authenticated connections can still use unencrypted HTTP. Exploitation requires an HTTP configuration and access to its network path; the resulting authority depends on the stolen credential’s permissions. HTTPS configurations do not follow this plaintext attack path.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: The new API-key and relay execution paths retain support for authenticated HTTP. An actor able to observe a configured HTTP connection can obtain reusable credentials and exercise their OpenSearch permissions. Basic-auth exposure predates this PR; the material change is its extension to API keys and private-cluster relay paths, not a newly introduced HTTP capability.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The credential-theft path exposes the OpenSearch resources accessible to the configured credential, potentially beyond the individual indices selected for a dashboard. Broader tenant compromise, relay-host compromise, or acquisition of ambient infrastructure identity is not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — For a connection configured with HTTP and credentials, a network-path attacker can capture authentication material and reuse its permissions. The retained finding verifies the transport condition. Base comparison establishes prior basic-auth exposure; API-key support extends the affected credential types.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The connection URL selects the target receiving configured authentication. The new validation declares a required authentication check and an optional monitoring-permission check; neither declaration requires encrypted transport or constrains the credential’s maximum OpenSearch permissions.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Monitoring validation and all three import steps are non-blocking by declaration. Partial monitoring availability is therefore an intentional configuration state, not evidence that successful authentication guarantees complete monitoring coverage.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Enforce HTTPS for credential-bearing connections at the effective request boundary, including relay execution. If plaintext compatibility is necessary, make that exception explicit and narrowly scoped rather than treating successful connectivity as evidence of secure transport.

Review feedback on the OpenSearch plugin found several rough edges.

A single-value metric of zero, or null when no documents match, fell
through the truthiness check and came back in a different row shape
from every other value. Testing for the property instead gives tiles
bound to the value column the same shape every time.

The service streams now build timestamps from the numeric bucket key
or epoch values rather than trusting key_as_string, which follows the
field's mapping format and is not guaranteed to be ISO 8601.

The monitoring check no longer claims search works, since neither
setup check tests it, and overview descriptions no longer say "open"
indices now that closed indices are included.

HTTPS is not enforced, because clusters without the Security plugin
are commonly reached over plain HTTP through a relay agent, and the
URL field's validation cannot depend on the chosen auth mode. Instead
the credential sections warn that http sends credentials unencrypted.
