Lets users send an existing directory as build context while honoring its .dockerignore, without the Dockerfile having to sit in the context root. Refs #1534. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Honor an existing withDockerfilePath selection.
If a caller sets withBuildContext(context).withDockerfilePath("docker/Dockerfile") and the context has no root Dockerfile, this branch still selects context/Dockerfile. docker-java rejects that missing file before it can use the configured relative path. Select the effective Dockerfile from dockerFilePath when no withDockerfile(Path) was supplied, or explicitly reject this combination. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Resolve symlinks before accepting the Dockerfile path.
If the Dockerfile path is a symlink to a file outside the context, normalize().startsWith(context) accepts it. The method therefore does not enforce its stated in-context requirement. Resolve both paths against the filesystem before checking containment, then reject an external target. Based on learnings: path-containment checks must account for symlinks as well as .. segments. Why
withDockerfile(Path)already hands context assembly to docker-java, which honors.dockerignore. It always uses the Dockerfile's parent directory as the build context, though, so you can't send a directory whose Dockerfile lives elsewhere, such asdocker/Dockerfile. Rather than reimplementing.dockerignorematching in Testcontainers, this PR exposes docker-java's existingwithBaseDirectory. What
ImageFromDockerfile.withBuildContext(Path)that sends that directory as build context, likedocker build <dir>, and honors its.dockerignore.<context>/Dockerfile, andwithDockerfile(Path)picks another one inside the context.withFile*/withDockerfileFromBuilder. Those entries would otherwise be dropped silently, the trap behind ImageFromDockerfile#withDockerfile can't be used with any other withFile* methods #2771.creating_images.md.BuildContextTestcovers the motivating scenario: a Gradle-cache-like directory as context, the Dockerfile in a subdirectory, and lock files excluded through.dockerignore.Not covered
.dockerignoremust be a file in the context root. Passing ignore rules in code would need support in docker-java.withFileFromPath(".", dir)still doesn't apply.dockerignore. The recommended route is nowwithBuildContext(dir).🤖 Generated with Claude Code

.dockerignorerules applied. The default Dockerfile is selected from the context root, or you can choose a Dockerfile located within the context.
