Resolves #3545.

Root Cause

During Korean IME composition on Windows, pressing Space dispatches a keydown event with isComposing true and keyCode 32. When xterm evaluates this event via its key handler without checking isComposing, CompositionHelper finalizes composition prematurely and xterm emits the space character and prevents default before the browser updates the input buffer. As a result, the space character was sent to the terminal before the composing syllable was committed.

Fix

  • Defined isImeCompositionEvent to identify key events during IME composition (isComposing, key === 'Process', or keyCode === 229) while exempting modifier key chords.
  • Wrapped terminal keydown handling with makeCustomKeyEventHandler so xterm ignores IME composition events and delegates composition completion to native browser input handling.
  • Added automated unit tests in termwrap-ime.test.ts verifying composition event detection and handler delegation.

Walkthrough

The terminal custom key handler now filters unmodified IME composition events, including events identified by isComposing, the "Process" key, or key code 229. Other events are delegated to the supplied handler, or return true when no handler is supplied. Tests cover event classification and handler behavior.

Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 9d763

The change tries to fix Korean IME spacing, but it can also stop some IME input from reaching the terminal. Narrow the suppression before merging so keyCode 229 input still reaches the terminal.

official xterm.js 6.0.0 source attachCustomKeyEventHandler CompositionHelper keydown keyCode 32 229

💡 Result:

For the **official xterm.js 6.0.0 tag**, the relevant flow is:

- `CompositionHelper.keydown(ev)` returns `false` for `keyCode === 229` when it is **not composing**. Before returning, it schedules a textarea-value check via `_handleAnyTextareaChanges()`. While composing, it also returns `false` for 229, treating it as a composition key. ([github.com](https://github.com/xtermjs/xterm.js/blob/6.0.0/src/browser/input/CompositionHelper.ts))
- **Space (`keyCode === 32`) is not specially handled** in `CompositionHelper.keydown`; it returns `true` there. So an ordinary Space proceeds to the regular keydown handling. ([github.com](https://github.com/xtermjs/xterm.js/blob/6.0.0/src/browser/input/CompositionHelper.ts))
- `attachCustomKeyEventHandler` is the public hook for custom keydown handling; it is separate from `CompositionHelper`. If the custom handler returns `false`, xterm suppresses its normal handling. But allowing a `keyCode === 229` event through that hook does **not** by itself bypass `CompositionHelper`’s later 229 check.

**Practical implication:** an IME that reports Space as `keyCode === 229` will take the 229 path, not the normal Space path. The 6.0.0 source schedules textarea-diff processing and returns `false`; it does not recover Space’s identity from `key` or `code`. The source establishes that behavior; what the terminal ultimately emits depends on the subsequent textarea/input events. ([github.com](https://github.com/xtermjs/xterm.js/blob/6.0.0/src/browser/input/CompositionHelper.ts))

Allow keyCode 229 events to reach xterm.

@xterm/xterm 6.0.0 schedules textarea-change processing for keyCode 229. The current return prevents that path, so IME-produced text may not reach the terminal.

Do not allow every IME event through. In xterm 6.0.0, CompositionHelper.keydown does not synchronously commit an active composition for Space keyCode 32. That event proceeds through normal keydown handling if allowed.
