First implementation step after the UI audit: the homepage and the few shared pieces it depends on. The goal is to do properly what Figma (2218:5121 desktop, 1023:2532 mobile) already designs, and to fix the parts of it that don't hold up between its two frames (402 and 1728 px).

What changes

Hero

  • The title uses a fluid size, 36 → 72 px. It was capped at 57 px, while Figma uses 77. It is back on two lines on desktop and is no longer squeezed on small phones.
  • "Sei una matricola?" moves next to "More groups", in the same style as the primary action. It used to float alone in the bottom-right corner, at 24 px (bigger than the primary CTA), and on mobile it read as an orphan. It is the most important path for a new student, so it now sits where people look.
  • The hero is shorter: max 88svh from sm, content-sized on mobile. This removes the dead band before Materials and lets the next section show at the fold.

Materials and 15+ Projects

  • One container for both sections: max 1536 px, gutters 24/40/64 px. That gives about 160 px margins at 1728, as in Figma.
  • Two compositions instead of three improvised ones.
    • From xl (1280 px): Figma's mirrored layout. Materials has its title on the right and cards on the left; Projects has its title on the left and cards on the right. The cards start at the paragraph's height, which keeps Figma's diagonal.
    • Below xl: one centred column, with the card block capped at 896 px so tablets keep sane proportions.
    • Before, the page jumped at 1280 and at 1536: one pixel of viewport halved a card.
  • Cards are sized by their content. Grids are bounded by min/max widths, and auto-rows-fr keeps each row even.
    • The fixed h-66 box, with 40–60 % empty space, is gone from the homepage.
    • Measured card widths are now 288–436 px at every width from 390 to 1920.
    • Before, they ranged from 262 to 662 px, and Carica's aspect ratio swung between 0.65 and 1.8.
  • Featured cards have smaller icons: 128 px instead of 176. In Figma the icon took about 45 % of the card and the text 15 %.
  • Project cards show where they lead. github.com ↗ / tol.polinetwork.org ↗ sit in the bottom-right corner, where Figma places its "Sincronizza ora" / "Apri simulatore" pills. Those labels would promise actions the links don't perform (most go to a GitHub repo); the domain is honest and fills the space the CTA was designed for.
  • Mobile carousel: the next card peeks in from the edge, and the dots are visible (see Shared).
  • Typos fixed in existing copy: più, ciò, è.

About us

  • It is a section-sized block instead of a full screen for one sentence.
  • h1 → h2: the page had two h1 elements.
  • The text gradient is now grey, matching the other titles. The style-guide rule (159:200) says background shapes OR coloured text, never both; the animated background is already the decoration. The left-to-right blue gradient coloured words by their horizontal position, not by meaning.

Interaction states: hover only means clickable

  • CardCaption showed the hover shapes on every card, including the non-clickable chapter cards in /storia. It now shows them only when the card has an href.
  • The homepage link cards (Visualizza, the three shortcuts, the project cards) now have hover. Before, they had none.
  • Linked CardCaption and CardIcon get a 2 px blue-secondary focus ring for keyboard users.

Links

  • No more href="#". The old upload page is empty, so "Carica" stays a plain card with no hover instead of a dead link.
  • Dispense, Esami and Appunti open the real archive (/it/materials/view/). The archive has no per-type pages, so no deep links were invented.

Shared changes and their reach

Change Other pages affected
typo-display-fluid-large / -extralarge added to typography.css and to the cn merge config none: new utilities
CardCaption: hover only with href, focus ring, text kept above the hover layer, optional footer /storia and /projects: non-link cards lose the hover
CardIcon: focus ring when linked /storia timeline, /groups, /guides, /matricole, wizard: keyboard focus only
CarouselDots: current dot blue-primary, others with a slate-300 border (the glass dots were nearly invisible) /projects, /join, /collabora, /structure on mobile

/storia, /projects, /join, /collabora, /groups, /guides, /matricole, /chi-siamo and /about were captured before and after at 390 and 1440 px.

  • Page heights are identical.
  • Pixel diffs show only the procedurally generated background, which differs on every load.

Verification

  • pnpm check: clean.
  • pnpm build: passes.
  • pnpm typecheck: clean after the build regenerates .next/types.
  • node --test tests/*.test.mjs: 2/2 pass.
  • I checked the homepage in the browser (production build) at 320, 375, 390, 430, 640, 768, 820, 1024, 1180, 1279, 1280, 1366, 1440, 1535, 1536, 1728 and 1920 px. No horizontal overflow at any width.

Trade-offs

  • The layout switches at 1279/1280. The change is deliberate: the composition goes from stacked to two columns. Cards change form there (horizontal caption → icon card) and project cards narrow from 436 to 305 px. That is still much smaller than the old 548 → 262 jump at the same point. A designed 1024 frame would let us move this lower.
  • The shortcut labels (Dispense, Esami, Appunti) stay at 28 px from sm, the same size as the card titles, as in Figma. They are a little loud at 1280–1440. Shrinking them means changing the CardIcon size map shared with /groups and /guides, so I left it.
  • Duplicate featured cards. The featured cards render in two variants: CardCaption below xl, CardIcon from xl. This existing pattern is kept so that each breakpoint uses the Figma variant for it.

Deliberately left out

  • The Card primitive still defaults to h-66 w-78. The homepage overrides it. Removing the default touches about 15 components on other pages and belongs in the card-family PR.
  • The footer. Choosing between the official component and the richer exploration is an open design decision.
  • Copy and language ("Materials", "15+ Projects", "More groups", "About us" in English) are unchanged; that is a content decision.
  • No new photos, CTAs or content. The upload destination for "Carica" is still to be provided.
  • The header logo is still an h1 on every page. Fixing that touches every page's heading outline, so it belongs in a separate PR.
  • Fonts, colours and tokens are unchanged. The only additions are the two fluid display steps.

Housekeeping

The screenshots live on the pr-assets/home-visual-refinement branch, so this PR's diff stays code-only. That branch can be deleted after review.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

- Hero: fluid title (36→72px) back on two lines on desktop, freshman link
grouped with the primary action instead of floating in the corner,
shorter hero so Materials is reachable.
- Materials and Projects: one container (max 1536px, 24/40/64px gutters),
Figma's mirrored title/cards composition from xl, a centred stacked
layout below it, and content-sized cards in min/max-bounded grids so card
widths no longer halve across breakpoints.
- Project cards show where they lead (domain + arrow) in the corner Figma
reserves for an action; the mobile carousel peeks the next card.
- Only cards with a destination react to hover; linked cards get a
keyboard focus ring. "Carica" no longer links to "#", the material
  shortcuts open the real archive.
- About us: section-sized instead of full screen, h2, grey gradient per the
style guide rule (decorated background or coloured text, not both).
- Shared: fluid display utilities, CardCaption footer slot, visible
  carousel dots.

Remove the upload instruction from the unlinked card.

“Caricali qui!” tells visitors to upload through “Carica”, but that card has no href at either breakpoint. Change the copy so it does not promise an upload action until the card has a destination. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
